Delayed Honeymoon, but a staycation after the wedding?

My Fiance and I have decided to have our wedding in the fall of 2014 on a Friday, and then travel a couple hours by car to a nice hotel and stay Friday and Saturday night, and then the summer of 2015 go on our "Honeymoon". Anypne else doing something similar to this?

  • Yea we got married in Dec, stayed a few nights in Chicago, and are doing the honeymoon this July. No regrets on waiting...it's fun to have something to look forward to and less stressful sicne we had more time to save up money and go somewhere we really wanted.

  • Where are you going on your honeymoon? We are considering staying in the mainland US, because we want to renew our vows on our 10th, 20th,etc. anniversary where we went to our honeymoon. We are thinking about either the Oregon Coast or the Outer Banks NC and doing a "bucket list" of events. Like sky-diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, driving a fancy rental car, etc. I am a teacher, so that's the main reason we are waiting until summer:)

  • We are! We are driving to Maine for a few nights right after the wedding, and then saving for an international trip in 2014. Our reasons are mainly financial. I will be graduating from grad school right before the wedding, and it didn't seem responsible to spend big money on a trip in addition to the wedding expenses until we know I'll be employed! Our dream is New Zealand...we can make it happen easily if my job search goes as planned. I do like your US idea, and I love the Outer Banks!
  • We did this. We got married on a Sunday and spent Mon & Tues night nearby.  We did our honeymoon two months later.  I was happy I didn't have to pack for a week at the same time as trying to get all the last minute stuff ready for the wedding.
  • I'm a teacher too, hence our delayed summer honeymoon. Smile

We're going on a Mediterranean Cruise from Barcelona to Venice. I LOVE the US idea especially with your vowel renewal thing. Both of those places are gorgeous and great road trip areas (with your fancy rental car!). The weather is really different...Oregon will be a lot cooler than NC most likely so depending on what you like that might help you decide. GL!

  • Yes!  I teach at a university and our wedding is mid-semester, so a honeymoon immediately after the wedding isn't possible.  We're going to stay at a nice resort in town for a couple nights, then take a big international trip to either New Zealand or Antarctica (weird, but we've both been dying to go!) the next year.
  • That's awesome guys! I was so nervous about being the "weird" bride. And yes NC and Oregon hae entirely different weather, and scenery! We just can't put our finger on which one we want to go to!

Who cares if it's weird? Also, we spent the weekend after our wedding in a BB and the 'real honeymoon' is next month. I'm in a musical right now. Can't leave the country yet. :
  • Nah, not weird. Smile  I think minimoons/delayed honeymoons are becoming more popular for financial reasons and time off issues. Either one you guys end up choosing will be awesome!

  • We are delaying our honeymoon as well.  Getting married in October, but not going on our honeymoon cruise until December.  Mostly doing so because fiance is still in college and this way he won't have to miss a week of classes.  Plus I like the idea of having a little break in the stress roller coaster between major events!
  • We are also delaying our honeymoon. I wondered if anyone else had the same issue. Due to school and work schedules, we are getting married in August 2014, but waiting till December for honeymoon. Possibly cruise, we are still deciding. We live in Colorado, so there are lots of places nearby that we can go to for a couple of days. Family coming from out of state, also, so maybe get to spend some time with family. Good luck with your planning.
  • We are doing the same thing. We are getting married in 3 weeks and I am 1 week into a brand new job (and already taking the week before and the week after the wedding off) but financially we can't go on our ideal honeymoon of Kauai. Our wedding/reception is at a BB on the coast where we will be staying the night before and the night after our wedding. We are thinking of getting away for a couple of days the week after the wedding as more of a mini-moon but haven't decided, well actually can't agree where to yet.

I think this is becoming much more common and is not the least bit wierd.
  • I know I'm late to this conversation but im doing a staycation for my honeymoon as well. After the wedding night we are just driving about an hour to maybe the casino or something so we can spend the rest of the weekend :) Then hopefully doing our "big" honeymoon after saving some more

We had to put our HM on hold as well (we're finally getting it this September! Two years later :)
I think you can't go wrong with either place, but I wanted to mention for those are you thinking of Oregon..

The  Oregon coast is AMAZING (but I'm biased since I'm a PNW native :)
If you want a fun place to stay, consider one of the McMenamins chains. They are this company that buys old schools and warehouses and things that are funky like that, refurbishing them to be hotels with theatres, bowling alleys, bars, etc but still keeping the integrity of the building. FOr example, I have stayed at The Kennedy school a couple times in Portland and it is SOOOO wonderful. The rooms are classrooms so they are large, it has a huge theatre and a bunch of bars that are all in keeping with the theme like "Recess" and "Detention" . This particular one also has it's own brewery. HIGHLY Recommend any of their places! It's just such a fun experience!

ETA: sorry, all. I didn't realize this was an old thread because of the newer poster. Mah baaaad
  • we did this too-- we got married in June, but our honeymoon is the first week of September due to our work schedules.  We got married on a friday, visited with family on Saturday and then took off on Sunday to Reno for a small mini moon (3 hrs from us).  It was fun to just get away.  we were given a nice suite and just did random things (our hotel had a movie theater, bowling ally, etc). It was really nice to just a get a break afterwards before heading straight back to real life.  And now we still have a honeymoon to look forward too in just a  few weeks!
