Guest book alternatives

We are not having a guest book at our reception, because I don't want to have a book where people just sign their names, but I wanted to know if anyone has done/seen any other fun alternatives?  I have seen well wishing cards, having people sign something else (ie a bottle of wine to drink on an anniversary), but just am not sure if any of those things are really worthwhile, and if we would appreciate them in the future.  Any ideas of something you did that you were glad you had afterwards, or saw at a wedding and though was really cool would be appreciated!

Re: Guest book alternatives

  • One of my guests is making us a quilt as a wedding gift that will then become my guest book for everyone to sign, which will then be able to be hung on the wall - got the idea from her, and she offered to make the quilt for me....

This is what I did. I liked it because I could hang it up and have it out of the way.

ETA: This company usually has groupon deals all the time which is why I went with it in the first place.

  • You named most things that people do..

Addie had her guests sign river rocks with a silver pen to keep.

I had a book that I very much appreciated flipping through from time to time.

A friend of mine had a thread cabinet that she repurposed and each of the guests wrote their best piece of marriage advice on a card and put it in the cabinets.

  • I am glad someone is asking this alternative guestbook question... I wanted to hear a few ideas too.  I don't like the ol' book, besides I have been there and done that... and this wedding is so small.  I saw the quilt idea a few weeks ago.
  • This is what we did...

I bought a wooden chest at Michaels and then painted it in our wedding colors and monogram (I also added handles) and then we had people sign it.  It sits on our living room floor and contains a wedding favor, all the cards we received, the football we used in pictures, our table number and a few other odds and ends from the wedding day.

  • I've seen people sign the matting of a picture of the couple, which then gets displayed (like Jessalyn's).

I've also heard of people doing a 'wedding tree' where people put their thumbprint on a picture of a tree and sign it (clicky)... the theory is the thumbprints make up the 'leaves' of the tree. The downside to this one is that ink can be hard to get off hands!

Ours signed and wrote things on river rocks, and we keep them in a vase in our home. It's one of my favorite things.

ETA: Never mind. I see KM already shared that. (stalker) Hahahaha!

  • We had a set of 20 cards, 5 sets of 4 cards each for each of our first 5 anniversaries.  On the front, I wrote "on your first/second/third/fourth/fifth anniversary" depending on which year it was for.  People then wrote well wishes and thoughts.  We opened the first 4 last month and it was amazing.  We got to read peoples thoughs and advice fo rthe first year.  Can't wait to open the rest!!

  • Our photographer is making an album of our engagement pictures that we are going to use as a guest book. If that hadn't been part of our package, we would have gone with a matted picture mentioned above.

  • LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that treasure chest idea..... I might do a variation on that..... way cool!
  • We printed cute little cards from vistaprint and left them next to our card box.  It said "Leave your thoughts and wishes for the happy couple".

A LOT of people did, and we have them in a scrap book.

  • My FH and I love putting puzzles together. I saw on Pinterest a white puzzle guests sign and we will put together and mod podge after the wedding and hang it in our home. We had thought of ordering a custom GB Packer jersey and having guests sign that but FH really loves the puzzle idea.

  • we created a picture of our story with pictures from the beginning through engagement pictures.  It also has quotes and other stuff: how we met; when we knew it was "the one," where we got engaged mixed throughout the book.  I'm waiting for my finished product but the preview looks great.  I got a groupon for my publisher so it only cost me $9.99!

If the book does not work for some reason, our back up plan is the quilt, but since I do not know anyone close to me who can do it, I know that is going to a project that just may never happen!

  • We're doing a pinboard with vintage postcards.  We have collected a bunch of cool postcards from places we've been and places we want to go, a lot of them really old.  We just love traveling and postcards.

So we're asking people to sign it/write something, and pin it on an upholstered pin board I made.  I'm not sure if I'll really display it, or just scrap book the cards, but I just love post cards :)

We're having a photobooth so we're just using the guest book that comes with that so it's one less thing to worry about.

Originally, we were going to have 5 empty wine bottles set out with a different anniversary on each and ask guests to write us a note and put it in one of the 5 bottles and then we'd open all of the notes on each anniversary.

  • We're doing a scrapbook-type thing.  We'll have scrapbook paper decorated with pictures of my FI and I, leaving blank spaces for people to sign with some nifty pens.  Each table is going to have a sheet and a couple pens, and once the reception is over they'll be collected and we'll put them into a book.
  • Maggie I love your guest book idea I may have to steal it!

  • We're having a photobooth (I know, I'm so original) and it prints two strips, so we're going to ask guests to stick them in a book and sign the page. I think it'll be cute. Plus, I get all the photos in digital form and I'm planning to make a collage to hang in our living room since it's film/music/photography themed anyway.

We originally wanted everyone to sign an acoustic guitar to hang in our home and pass down to our eventually kids, but we couldn't pick one to save our lives. I really wanted to find a light blue acoustic guitar. Oh well.

OP, do something that goes with your personality. FI and I are total hams, so the photobook works for us and our friends/family.

  • Awesome, thanks!! Those are some great ideas!
  • Thanks for all the guest book love!!!

Did I seriously just come up with a sort of, somewhat, maybe, possiby "original" idea?

  • We did something like this with our wedding colors (and without the birds). Each person signed a leaf. We framed it right away, then I broke the frame while trying to straighten it out. But eventually it will go back up.
