Ring Carat

my initial question was dumb.

Re: Ring Carat

  • I'd say forget about it. You fell in love with the ring for a reason, right?  Do you FEEL ripped off? If you feel like you paid a fair market price, then just relax and wait :)

  • Do you feel ripped off? With your naked eye, you won't be able to tell the difference betwen a diamond that is 6.04mm and one that is 6.44mm.

[QUOTE]I am not "officially" engaged yet but the ring has been purchased.  I haven't since I picked it out a couple of weeks ago.  In the meantime, I've been having regret.  I have done additonal research since the purchase and learned that my 1 carat is small - relative to it's facing.  It is a round diamond and measures 6.04mm x 6.14 x 4.05.  However, a very well cut 1 carat should be closer to 6.4mm.  So now I am worried that I was ripped off and it's going to appear small!  I wish I would have gone in with better research but I got caught up in the moment.  I know it's not all about the ring (rather it's about love and the man) but I am an overly analytical person.  Thoughts??

You are stressing about absolutely nothing. You need to let this go.  Quickly.
  • I always thought I wanted the "1 carat princess cut"... until I tried it on and HATED it-- too big for my small little hands.  I fell in love with a 1 carat total weight ring that only has a 1/3 carat round stone but is lined with little diamonds and a diamond band.  Its PERFECT for me.  Your ring will not appear to be "small" trust me.  It's a 1 carat diamond- nothing small about that

Like actual documented and diagnosed OCD, or are you using OCD as pretty much a pejorative?

FWIW, I happen to have actual documented and diagnosed OCD, and this wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

OP - unless the diamond was advertised to you as being different dimensions than it was, just move on. However, if they told you it was bigger and you later realized it was smaller, I'd say they owe you some money back (but it doesn't sound like that's the case).

And one of my best friends has very severe -- in fact, crippling -- OCD, and it upsets her to no end when someone flippantly says that they're 'so OCD' because they have no idea what it's like to have your mind constantly destroying your psyche. I share this opinion with her as someone who has manic depression and hates seeing 'LOL I'M SO BIPOLAR' used like it's no big thing.

I meant that the carat difference wouldn't bother me, not that using the phrase "I'm so OCD" wouldn't bother me. It annoys the heck out of me. My point was that saying "I'm so OCD" does not automatically equal "and therefore I need my ring to be the prescribed measurements"

  • And while we're at it, the "d" in OCD is for disorder. One is not OCD, one has OCD.

And I agree, Stage - suddenly, everyone and there sister thinks they're bipolar. I guess "being" OCD just isn't cool anymore ;)

Ah, okay, I thought that you were saying that it was nbd that she was using OCD in a herp derp fashion.

  • Wait?  Are you saying I'm the only one who carries jewelry measuring tools and glass around making sure everyone's diamonds are what carat they say they are?

Agreed. It makes you sound really bratty to care about that small of a difference.

I didnt even know what carat my ring was or how much it was worth when I first got it. It was given to my FI by my mother, so I honestly could care less. Its more about where it came from (for me) than how much it is worth or how many carats it has. Everybody who sees it really loves it. Its a lot different than what I thought I wanted. I thought I wanted 1 big rock, but this is a small diamond with little diamons all around the band. I wouldnt change it for anything in the world. Ive been engaged for over a year, and I still have no idea the details of it. I havent even bothered to ask my mom or go get it appraised, because its not going to change how much I already love it.
