When something is labeled as $, $$, or $$$, what does that mean?

I remember seeing it explained somewhere, but now I can't find it anywhere and it's driving me nuts!

Usually there is a scale somewhere. For instance $-$100-$200, $$=$200-$300
etc etc

The range can vary from site to site. Usually they'll have a faq section somewhere to explain it.
