1 hour to try on dresses?

Hi everyone,

I read somewhere (on another forum) that the pronovias flagship store in New York only gives you 1 - 1 1/2 hours for your appointment. Is this standard? I would have thought that there really wouldn't be so much of a time limit! I'm travelling to New York from Phoenix, AZ for the convenience of being able to try on all of the dresses I want, since local stores only have the previous year's collections or a limited stock of samples.

I've never tried on dresses before, so I'm not sure how long appointments usually last. Advice appreciated!

Lexi

Re: 1 hour to try on dresses?

  • I honestly would have gone crazy if it had taken more than an hour. You should be fine. Try to go in with an idea of what you want to try on, and a good consultant should quickly get a feel for your taste after you try on a couple gowns. Try to give specific feedback when you have a dress on, i.e. "I really like this neckline, but I want a fuller skirt."
  • Pretty sure an hour and a half is the standard. I tried on 10-12 dresses in that time. The last one I tried at my 1st appointment was the winner. It is a business and shops make money with brides buy, so I am sure the time limit is to deter window shopping.
  • When you make your apt, double check. I tried on 9 dresses in 45 minutes and ended up ordering #1.
  • 60 to 90 minutes is standard. But maybe tell them you are coming from out of state and see if they will book you for 2 hours. You'll likely be over it after an hour though.
  • It's standard and plenty of time.
  • That is a standard time limit to the appointment.  Remember consultants work on commission so there has to to a limit to the appointment time, if not one bride could take up the consultants entire day and that consultant could miss out on other sales.  Also there has to be a time limit so salons can correctly schedule brides throughout the day.

Also, an hour to an hour and a half is plenty of time to try on dresses.  You will be surprised how ready you will be to take a break and walk away for a breather after an hour or so of trying on dresses.

  • Yeah that sounds about right. Trust me after trying on dresses for half that time you will be hot, sweaty, and about ready for a break
  • Yeah that is a pretty standard amount of time. Especially for your first consultation. After that the follow ups are actually a little bit shorter. Or were at David's Bridal etc.
  • I agree that the time they allot you for trying on dresses is adequate for you.  Remember that consultants work on commission and it is not fair for you to take up more than 1-2 hours of their time.  Any more than 2 hours, you will get tired and confused!

If you want more time, then a factory bridal salon set up where you do not have to work with a salesperson is best for you.
  • Just wanted to post an update. My appointment was today at the flagship store. Our consultant was Christine and she was AMAZING! Our appointment was for an hour, but she never rushed us, and we wound up staying quite a bit longer. It's a good thing we did, because I found THE dress and we wound up purchasing it. She took plenty of time with us to help us figure out the logistics of coming back to NYC for fittings when I live in Phoenix. We were able to take advantage of the 12.5% discount for ordering the same day, and to top it off, the manager comped the $500.00 alteration fee, so alterations will be free. They did this because of the added expense of travelling cross country. They even offered to do the final 2 fittings over the course of 4 days so I don't have to make multiple trips to New York (not that I'd mind! The boutique is betweenn Fifth Ave and Madison Ave. Perfect area.)

All in all, it was a great trip and I wound up buying a gorgeous Elie Saab gown! Can't WAIT for my fitting.
