short bride what type of dress?

Ok so im 5'1(on the short side of it) and I do not want a long dress....Ive looked and looked and I really want a tea length dress but would this dress look bad on such a short person like me? The wedding is outdoors ceremony and reception so I dont want anything that will drag. And it going to be very casual so any advice would be helpful...Thanks

Re: short bride what type of dress?

  • Most of the tea length dresses on short brides that I have seen tend to make the ladies look like little girls playing dressup. Its like the bodice and skirt are just not proportioned correctly for a short bride. You can have a full length dress without it dragging or having a train. That may be something to look in to.
  • I agree with cmg. I'm 5'2'' and tea length dresses make me look short and frumpy. I suggest going shopping for fun, with no expectations to see what you like. If you really want short, I'd go with knee length.

My sister is engaged and she is 4'11". Her favorite wedding dress right now is a knee length dress. PPs are right... There are a lot of options and you'll know what you like when you try it on. Good luck and have fun!!!

</div><div>I have been told that tea length is perfect for petite brides. I think the decision also has to do with your body shape, not just your height. Are you hour glass, pear shape, apple shape, petite, slim athletic, full-figured, large-busted, bottom-heavy, etc? These are the factors that really determine which dresses are going to shine on you. If you're apple-shaped or petite then you have the best body type for tea length gowns. I really love tea length dresses, you can show off your legs and your pretty shoes! And it's perfect for an outdoor wedding like yours.

  • I am 5'5" and feel swallowed up in a tea length dress. I really wanted one for a 50's vintage feel but I think they look best on women with small waists. If you look at vintage tea length wedding dresses on Etsy they are all like 26 inch waists and 38 inch busts. Ball gowns in general felt like too much dress. I went with a fit and flare dress.
  • Like everything else, go try them on. I look horrible in tea length dresses, not because I'm short, but because I have big calves and short legs. My SIL looks amazing in them (ever so slightly shorter than me).

  • I agree with PPs...you have to try them on.  It also does depend on your body type.  If you are very slim and all-around petite, it might look great.  If you are short, busty, and a little chunky like me it will probably not look great.

Personally, if you want a short dress I think above the knee is much more flattering to us shorter girls than tea length.

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone...Maybe I will try the knee length but like you said I will have to just go try some on. Im very hour glass shape and size 8 in jeans size so I didnt want to make myself look any bigger. But thanks for the help will keep looking. Smile
