cakes?

So this Saturday FI and I are picking out our baker and cake.  We have 3 appointments, so it will definitely be a "let them eat cake" kind of day.  Anyways, how did you girls pick out your cake?  I was told to bring pictures of ideas or cakes that I like, but I guess I don't have a design in mind at all.  Do you girls have a look or cake picked out already?

How did you figure out your design?  I guess I'm completely lost and FI is primarily concerned with taste not so much look ha ha.  Our topper will be our monogram, either my first initial a larger intiial for our last name and then his first initial, or we may just go with just the last name initial.

My venue provides a cake, but I contacted them asking if I could switch that for another upgrade since my cousin is a cake designer and has offered to make our cake for us. Venue was happy to accommodate, which was nice.

I made a pinterest board of cakes I thought were cool. I plan on showing her the designs and styles I like and see if she can come up with a design for us from those elements. Here is the pinterest board:

I have a cake topper that is rather large, I will bring that to her as well. I really wouldn't mind or care if the cake topper was placed next to the cake instead of on top of...those types of things don't bother me.

FI and I will go and visit my cousin and she will make some flavors ahead of time for us. We will try them and talk about the design then.

Honestly, FI and I had no clue what we wanted our cake to look like when we went into the bakery...our baker had a huge binder of pictures of cakes they had done (as well as some actual decorated cakes in store). There were so many ideas of things they could do, and we ended up combining a few different ideas from different cakes into one.

We didn't have any idea of what we wanted our cake to look like. We went to three bakeries and looked at their pictures. As we were looking at the pictures my fiancé suggested we get a cake that looks somewhat like a mountain and we get dragon figuerines from the tabletop gaming store as our cake toppers since I put dragons on my save the dates and invitations. Then the idea kind of evolved from there. Looking at the pictures is a great way of getting ideas.

My FI & I knew we wanted to have cupcakes, but honestly, we hadn't thought about how we wanted them decorated. So we went to the bakery we had in mind and we decided that we loved the way the cupcakes looked just the way they were decorated normally, so we're doing that.

I actually need to call them and ask how they're planning to decorate our cutting cake, and make sure it works with the topper I made...

I did a google image search for black white and red wedding cakes our wedding colors. I saved pictures of what I liked and took them to the bakery. From there we decided which flavors and fillings we wanted and the cake consultant worked with us to come up with a design. Do you have a theme for your wedding? Colors? Your favorite flowers? Or you could always just go with a good old fashioned white wedding cake with some embellishments.. You bakery should be able to guide you :

This is our cake.  we are doing flowers on top instead but this is the exact colors.  Our cake is included in our package.  When we got to the cake shop, they let us look at the section of the book that was free.  We could have upgraded but they had some very pretty ones!  We are not  into all the different kinds of flavors.  We ended up doing three tiers.  The bottom will be vanilla cake with hazelnut buttercream frosting , the second will be chocolate with vanilla buttercream and the top tier is ours and we just repeated the bottom layer.
