Getting in Shape

Many months ahead, but nervous

I'm new to this as I still have 13 months to go till the big day. I tried on my mother's dress as my first dress & became depressed. Her dress is a size 10 and I'm too big for it when I normally wear a size 6! I'm not "fat or big" but I couldnt fit into it! I dont want to be depressed while trying on dresses in the next month, so how can I get in shape early and stay in shape? Any ideas/workouts?

  • OP, listen to kwith, she's right on the money.

I used to manage a bridal salon, and most dresses run AT LEAST 4 sizes smaller than standard sizing! Don't panic or be upset. The number is on the inside of the dress and no one will ever see it but you - and your FI loves you now.

If you want to twaek your lifestyle to be healthier - by all means, go for it. Log your food, work out, hang out here. But don't be defined by the number on the inside of a dress. A wedding is a great incentive to get in shape, but if it's going to be a permanent change, it has to go beyond a "diet."

    Good luck, and stick around!

  • agoad - I agree 100% with kwith's thoughts, especially on how things have changed over the years.  I was an 8/10 when I tried on dresses, and only found a few designers for which my street size was not comfortable.

Here's a fun article for some perspective. http://tess45.hubpages.com/hub/Vintage-Sizing-vs-Modern-Sizing

  • Awesome article, Lobsters!

Very true, and Marilyn has always been (in my mind) the ultimate definition of sexiness.

  • These ladies are wise, Kwith and Jenny make wonderful points.

If you want to lose weight or tone up for yourself, go for it, but you shouldn't want to do it just for a dress.
