Questions!

I'm bored at work.  Really bored.  And I'm still sad that this company hasn't gotten back to me.

SOOOO, in honor of the recent weddings, upcoming weddings, and start of wedding season, in general - how about some non-GIS wedding questions?

1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?

Feel free to add more :)

    I'll play!

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We are getting married at FI's cousin's lakeside lodge. We picked it because it's awesome, of course!

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
Undecided. I didn't think FI wanted one, and our dessert comes with the meal, but he's starting to get into the 'traditional' things, and wants to cut the cake. Guess I should get on that - lol!

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
I'm really looking forward to: a) having the wedding WE want (it didn't work that way with my first and b) dancing the night away under the stars, because our wedding weekend coincides with the perseid meteor showers.

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?

I'm still totally on the fence about inviting my sister. I'm not stressed about any other part of the wedding, just that.

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
Not registered, and too early to say.

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
Cape Cod.  It's always been our vacation spot, and we wanted to keep it small, which made the idea of a destination a bit more favorable.  We picked Chatham Bars Inn because it was the one place I always dreamed about having cocktails on the front porch growing up.  I never had a fairytale wedding venue when I was little, so this was the closest place to that idea.
    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
It was amazing.  Vanilla cake, dirty iced with vanilla buttercream and fondant.  Filling was champagne mousse with strawberries.
    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
Our first look.  It was hands down amazing and the best decision ever.  Oh, and the fire pit and bubbles.  Fire pits and bubbles are awesome.
    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
Invitations.  Hated taking care of those.
    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
The kitchenaid stand mixer, a tray from my mom that had the photo of the church inscribed in it (it's a long story having to do with the history of the church), a stone mortar and pestle, and this really cool sign my brother's girlfriend got us with our last name spelled out in photos of architectural items from New Orleans (where she currently lives)

Another random thought from the wedding - any other bride's not get to drink anything at the wedding?  I think I got through my toasting champagne, but we had an awesome beer and wine list and I am legit annoyed that I didn't get more of it.

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We are getting married at our church, and having our reception at a performing arts centre 1/2 a block away! We chose that venue because it was so close to the church (no need to travel) and because of the view - it looks right out onto a park and the river with a full wall of 2 story windows!
    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
We are just figuring this out now! Probably chocolate with vanilla buttercream (I'm not a big fan of fondant). We had been thinking of doing cupcakes but I'm going back and forth on that now...
    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
Getting married! And having my FI see me in my dress :)
    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
The guest list! I heard people say it was hard but... I really, really didn't expect it to be THIS hard to figure out.
    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
Not registered yet but I know I'm going to register for a kitchenaid stand mixer... can't wait for that, along with some attachments (fresh pasta and fresh ice cream? yes please!).

LOVE IT! I'm going to do picture bonuses!

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We got married at the Henry Ford Model T Museum in Detroit, MI - it was the first plant where the Model T was produced and was recently converted into a museum. It is now listed as the most popular place in Detroit to get married. We picked the location because it HAD to be in Detroit (DH is obsessed with Detroit and has been since he was a kid), and we decided to do a 1920's theme, so it was sort of perfect.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
I didn't really care about the cake and didn't want to pay a cutting fee, so we went the cupcake route. We had 6 different flavors of giant cupcakes (Red Velvet Cheesecake, Grumpy Cake, Funfetti, Salted Caramel and Cherry Chip, Black & White)...and now I want a cupcake.

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
My favorite thing was the speeches. My cousin was my man of honor and he gave a wonderful speech (he used to be in politics so he knows how to move a crowd with words lol). My sister did a gag speech with fun props (mostly jokes about me being a trouble maker growing up etc.). It was also great when DH's friends gave speeches and were all "Don't mess it up! You found a great thing". The speeches were just the right amount of sentimental and funny. I'm so happy we recorded the speeches, eventually I'll cut together a wedding video (when I find time).

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
Working with my venue was the absolute worst part of wedding planning.

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
Something INTERESTING we got that wasn't on our registry was sex paint. Yeah, let that sink in for a minute. One of our friends really thought outside the box and she must have thought "oh, well they like sex, and Entropic is an artist, so SEX PAINT IS PERFECT". It's a GIANT canvas that comes with paint and tarps, so you're supposed to lay it on the ground, throw paint on yourselves and go to town. This item is still in it's package and I seriously don't know what to do with it.

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We're getting married outside on the shores of Seneca Lake then having a ballroom reception at the Ramada (both within the state park). We live only a few blocks from the lake and wanted our families to come see the town we live in and our house that we bought together.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
    Three tiers, round, rock candy:
It'll look pretty much just like this, but in our colors. I already bought all the rock candy! It'll be white cake with strawberry filling, chocolate with chocolate ganache filling, and chocolate with peanut butter filling.

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
I'm not sure what I'm looking forward to the most other than getting married. I'm so excited to marry my FI, he is seriously amazing and I can't wait to call him mine. And dancing I guess. I love to break it down.

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
I had a hard time dress shopping. I tried on over 100 dresses and still kind of am not sure I picked the right one. I think had I managed to lose more weight first I would have gotten a more fitted dress. Also, had my budget been only a few hundred dollars more I would have bought the dress I drooled over for months that I tried on and loved only to find out I couldn't afford it.

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
We got a new synthetic down comforter! I also really want our Fiesta Ware. But my mom is s BB&B manager and said whatever isn't purchased off that registery she'll just buy for us as Christmas and birthday presents, so I'm not too worried.

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
Our ceremony is in a gallery space of an historic mill and the reception will be at a sort-of industrial hall about a block and a half away. We fell in love with both of the spaces because they have a very laid back feel, but are also very elegant. Exactly how I want my wedding! We also liked that it was atypical - I haven't been to a wedding in similar venues at all.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
I have no idea yet! I know I want one layer with lemon cake and rasperry filling, but don't know about the rest. I will probably have it decorated very simply.

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
I am looking forward to walking down the aisle and having FI see me for the first time, spending time with all of my family and friends, and dancing like a mad woman!

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
I am stressing most about the guest list. I want to cut it down and FIs Mom is arguing with me constantly guaranteeing that 1/3 of her list won't come - she won't listen to the 'plan for 100% attendance' rule!

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
Haven't registered yet, so can't say! But I am excited to pick out matching plates. Smile

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue? FI and I lived together before a wedding, in another city about an hour away from where both our parents live. We decided to have the wedding in the town since it would be a little bit cheaper and a heck of a lot more convenient for pretty much everybody. Our venue was an old mill that functions as a restaurant and special events venue. It's one of the top venues in the region. It's got a "wow" factor and I've been to the restaurant before and so we knew the food was amazing. It was pricey but all the other venues we looked give you a lot less for only a slightly lower price. So we decided to "splurge" on the top venue.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake. Banana cake with chocolate and salted caramel fillings. Beyond delicious!
    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most? I was happy to see everybody enjoying themselves. We had a "small" wedding (under 100 people) so it was small enough to be intimate but big enough to have that atmosphere. We tried to balance between a "cultural" and a "Canadian" wedding and succeeded in pleasing everybody. Everybody genuinely had a blast so I was happy (or relieved, more like). Our Canadian friends even raved about the cultural music we played - you can't get better party music than Balkan Gypsy brass!

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan? Guest list and seating chart!

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register? The best present we got was a "date in a box" to use "in case of emergency" - a crystal whiskey and champagne glass, a small bubbly and Johnnie Walker, some chocolate, smooth music cds, quick snacks, condiments and recipes to throw together a "date night" in minutes. So creative!

entropic - those cupcakes look legit amazing.  i'm kind of wishing i could go back in time, move to where you live, befriend you, go to your wedding, and eat all of them... in a non-crazy stalker kind of way.  i'm just really hungry...

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We are going with a ballroom called LaCentre.  I was dead set against a traditional ballroom, but the price was right and they have been SO accommodating.  Plus it's pretty all inclusive so it made planning easier.  Now that we cut costs there we can splurge on other fun stuff.  Like our late-night snacks of pizza and sliders...mmmm

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
Actually we are finalizing the cake this weekend.  It'll be red velvet for 2 layers, and one layer of apple cinnamon with caramel (for a fall themed wedding).  i;m allergic to chocolate so my guests will just have to deal with not having a chocolate layer.  What's really cool though is the frosting has a black lace pattern transferred on with sugar.  I'll post a pic sometime because i'm obsessed with it!

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
I'm looking forward to showing off my dress, and the toasts.  I'm looking forward to being surprised by the moments that will be really meaningful.  I usually never know what's going to hit me hardest.

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
Selecting the venue.  Everything prices differently and has different packages, I nearly lost my mind.  The honeymoon has also been a gargantuan pain at times.  We're going to do a week in Paris (since I'm anti-beach) then a few days in Cassis in the south of france (for my beach loving FI).  It'll be super fun I hope but it's a lot to worry about.  I definitely see the allure of just going to an all-inclusive!!

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
I randomly registered for a cake-cicle maker, which seems awesome.  Who doesn't want popcicle shaped cake on a stick??

@Lobsters - Grumpy cake is the chocolate cupcake with the bump in the frosting - it's a Michigan thing, but it's a bump of buttercream with chocolate ganache over the top. It's super yummy. I think Entemann's makes one that's called "bumpy cake" and this cupcake is a ripoff of that.

@Xcaly - I think I would seriously hurt this friends feelings if we did that. Right now I'm telling her we haven't had a chance to use it because we don't have space to hang it in our apartment. I don't know WHAT I'm going to say when we finally get into a house. Maybe she'll forget about it :)

@Choagie - It's too bad you weren't there, we had something like 50 cupcakes leftover and ended up handing them out to homeless people and hotel staff after the wedding and STILL had like 20 that we took home with us (worst idea ever, I totally ate a cupcake a day for a week straight before we finally threw them out).

We're doing cupcakes as well and are kind of stumped as to how many we should order.  How many did you order and how many guests did you have?  My friend's sister did cupcakes and mentioned having a ton left over as well.  I don't want to spend a bunch of money on something we don't need.

<div>We had 145 guests RSVP that they were coming, only about 125 showed up and we had ordered 180 cupcakes (we ordered extra anticipating that people might want to try more than one flavor). Turns out a lot of guests did eat two or more, BUT a lot of guests also didn't have any because it was so hot. You really can't know for sure - I would still error on the side of having a few extras.</div>

I'm pretending it's Friday and am going to be a super AW :o

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We got married at the Bellingham Ferry Terminal. It was an AMAZINGLY lucky find. It was [obviously] on the water in a big glass dome so we could be indoors (it did rain that day) but we had the beautiful view of the ocean and mountains. It was also down the street from Fairhaven which is an area of the town that has older buildings and great restaurants.. very boutique-y. Great for photos :)

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
The wedding cake was champagne cake with chocolate ganach in between the layers and a rum buttercream. I made the cake topper to be a photo of H's grandparents wedding day. His grandfather had passed away the previous year while he was deployed so he wanted something to make him feel like they were at our day with us.
DONT JUDGE!! This was just a snap that my sister took of the cake while filling in the middle with flowers.. so this isn't a complete picture of the cake, but yeah.

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
Oh goodness.. so so much.. lol. It was so wonderful to see our familys get together and socialize they way they did. They genuinely liked each other.. That was awesome. But I think the moment that stands out the most was right before we walked down the aisle. He never practiced our first dance. The night before the wedding H's parents taught him how to waltz and moments before the ceremony he pulled me aside and taught me. It was great :)

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
The most annoying thing was probably the guest list. People are ridiculous. I'll leave it at that. lol

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
Oh man! We got an awesome gift that wasn't on the registry. My uncle bought us a $200.00 gift card to Canlis, which is the suuuuper high end restaurant in Seattle (for perspective, that only covered half the bill) and he put it with a bottle of REAL champagne, which I had neved had before. It was suppose to be for our first anniv. but H was deployed over that so.. we did it when he got back.

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We picked the Merion in Cinnaminson (Skylight Ballroom). When we went to tour we both just fell in love with the place, the people, everything. It was breathtaking.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
Undecided! Wedding isn't until November but we'll sit down in May-June I believe with the baker and get it sorted out. We figure we will just have something simple. FI has Celiacs so he will have his own side cake that we can enjoy and it will most likely be vanilla :)

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
The whole day?  I don't know I can't pick... Marrying my best friend and being able to share that moment with all of our closest friends and family. Being able to celebrate it with everyone. I Just am excited for it all!

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan? Honestly, so far nothing. I have had absolutely minimal drama (if any)... We haven't had any snags with vendors and have been very fortunate to find amazing people to work with. I think the most annoying thing I have right now is finding an officiant as I am not religious and FI is catholic but non-practicing and we are having a nondenominational ceremony.

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
    ...I'm hoping for a Dyson vacuum. :)

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We are getting married at a botanical garden in town.  We picked it because it was so pretty!  And we can have an indoor ceremony that isn't in a church.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
We are having cupcakes.  Still working on the flavors.  Choosing probably 4 of these 5 flavors: vanilla bean, chocolate truffle, strawberry champagne, crème brulee, and chai tea latte.

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
I'm looking forward to the first look, so FI can finally see my dress, seeing a bunch of family members, and the honeymoon in Hawaii.  The honeymoon is definitely the light at the end of the tunnel for stressful wedding planning.

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
Guest list.  I am very nervous that FMIL has been issuing verbal invites to people we are not planning on inviting. Plus she keeps mention how we need to invite 130 guests so that we will end up with 100 attending.  Our venue only holds 100...so no.

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
We haven't registered yet, but I know I will be registering for this kitchen aid.

Thanks Brittany! We got suuuper lucky because it is owned by the state so it was only 100 bucks an hour or a grand for the entire day which included tables and chairs, and we could pick aaaanny vendor we wanted, and no restrictions on alcohol. super score.

We thought we would end up with a basic chocolate or vanilla cake, but you will be surprised at how many options bakers will have for you to try.. I have a feeling you'll end up with something ornate as well ;)

@entropic, I have NEVER heard it called grumpy cake. It's bumpy cake, girl. I belive it was originally created by Sander's. ETA: You can go ahead and send that 'paint' my way if you're not gonna use it...just sayin'...

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?

We're getting married at a county park (wait!) that has a big old beautiful Tudor-style mansion on the premises - some old rich family's summer home. It's way out in the country and I love it - lined with willow trees, overlooking a lake - very Michigan. The ceremony is in the English garden coutyard, and then the reception is just right inside in their ballroom - it was important to us to not have a gap, but we didn't want a 'traditional' ballroom (golf course). The whole place is just gorgeous and romantic.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
Key Lime Pie! I don't like cake all that much.

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most?
Walking down the aisle. The song I chose, the dress, seeing FI, seeing our families, walking with my dad, the bouquet...just having everything come together for that moment. I'm a bit of an AW, so that's probably part of it too :)

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?
The rehearsal dinner! It is traditional in FILs circle to invite all OOT guests, so we are having like 75-100 people (I gave up that fight long ago). Finding a place to host that many people is stressing me out to no end. It's practically another wedding.

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register?
I'm excited for my KitchenAid mixer (pistachio!), but honestly I'm more excited to see what the off-registry gifts are! And...the cash. Quite frankly.

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue?
We are getting married in a catholic church.  It was not a strong preference of either of ours, but it is my parents' and his dad's church, and the church we both grew up in and got all of our sacraments done in, so not a bad choice.  What did it more for me, is that it is also the church where we held the service for my brother when he passed in '08.  It gives me a sense of him almost being there since it is the only possible connection to him on that day.

    2. Tell us about your wedding cake.
Pumpkin cake with caramel buttercream tiers alternated with chocolate chip poundcake with vanilla buttercream tiers. YUM! It will be navy blue fondant with fuchsia details in icing, fondant, and gumpaste.  I will have to show pics after, it will be amazing!

    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most? I am looking forward to being that done up and in the dress on that day, and having him see me, and also our first dance.  I've had the song in my head for years before I met him, and he fit right in and loved it as well, I can't wait.

    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan? Guest list/seating.  I feel like I have zero control over it... my dad has gone 'father of the bride-zilla' on this one :(

    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you got for which you didn't register? I am the same as a lot of you- the stand mixer, and the dyson vacuum too, my current one sucks, but not in a good way!

    Better late than never??

    1. Where did you get, or are you getting married, and why did you pick that location/venue? We are having our ceremony in a historic church in uptown Dallas, and our (brunch) reception will be in a hotel directly across the street.  We picked them because they are so close to each other, the coordinator at the hotel is awesome, and they are elegant and classic.  Also, FI's only request was "someplace old," so I found the
oldest church and hotel I could find in this very new city.  I'll AW :)

     2.
Tell us about your wedding cake.  It will be delicious!  We haven't planned it out yet, but we decided on a bakery that is known for its deliciousness.  We will probably have more than one flavor so chocolate and white cake can be involved :)
    3. What was your favorite thing you remember from your wedding day, or the thing you are looking forward to most? Wearing my gown and FI and I seeing each other for the first time.  And saying our vows!!!
    4. What was or is/has been the most annoying thing to plan?  Nothing, really.  We have already been engaged a year, so the annoying thing has been being engaged so long!
But on the other hand, that has meant zero planning-related stress.
    5. What is the thing you're most excited for on your registry, or something awesome you
got for which you didn't register?  Of course the Kitchen aid stand mixer!  Also, new bedding and towels would be nice.  :)
