Minor Dilemma

Ok, so due to massive budget constraints, we have had to cut down the majority of our wedding across the board (except my dress, but if I didn't have it already, it would have been cut down, too.  My FI INSISTED I get the dress I wanted, so I did.).  This means that the photographer I had my heart set on (a friend who has an INCREDIBLE talent) was too expensive for us, even after trying to work within our measly, nearly-non-existent budget.  The photographer we have now is an amateur with rave reviews from my Wedding Planner/FMIL.  He did some of the photos for her wedding, and they have raved about him.  Now that I've seen some of his stuff, I'm worried that our photos will turn out cheesy and all wrong.  I'm no professional, but I know what a good photo looks like.  He gets the framing and focus perfect, but some of his timing was off (people blinked/looked away) and lighting wasn't always right. I also wanted some B&W shots, but I doubt he does any. I don't want to step on any toes, but I'm nervous as all hell!  I also know that beggars can't be choosers, but this is our wedding day!  I don't want them to look amateurish, but I know that we can't afford anything better. (As of right now, he isn't charging us)  Idk what to do, and the photos were one of the most important things to me. I don't know him hardly from Adam; just met the man yesterday.  I don't trust him (yet), and I'm afraid to say anything and hurt any feelings.  Suggestions?  Please be nice....
