My Guest List won't upload! Please help!

My Guest List document will not upload onto the website. It is definitely in the correct format, and I used the template from the website. Here is what I am getting...

An error has occurred while importing your contacts. Please confirm your file is an Excel document, noted with .xls in the file extension. ERROR [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] External table is not in the expected format. ERROR [IM006] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed ERROR [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] External table is not in the expected format.

  • One of two possible things. One, knot tools suck and don't work well. Or two, are you absolutely sure it's an xls file and not xlsx? I've run across this error so many times when dealing with people running older vs newer versions of excel.

Yes, I am 100% sure it is an xls file. I checked it a re-saved it a bunch of times. The thing is, I uploaded one a long time ago and it worked. But, it is not updated so I deleted the old one and it won't let me upload the new one,.

  • Shelby, I took down the info you posted and I'll ask the tech people at TK what the problem is.
  • I'm having the same problem.  I've resaved it with every format of Excell that it allows and I keep getting errors.  Different errors, depending on how the file is formatted when I save it, but errors nonetheless.
  • This is what mine says, "An error has occurred while importing your contacts. Please confirm your file is an Excel document, noted with .xls in the file extension. ERROR [42000] [Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] 'Sheet1$' is not a valid name. Make sure that it does not include invalid characters or punctuation and that it is not too long."
  • mine's doing the same thing :/
  • I get the same msg as thetheri

I had the same problem. Make sure your file is not a workbook with data in multiple sheets. I copied the list to Sheet 1 of a new workbook and saves as an Excel 1997-2003 file. That worked.
  • I can't get my guest list to upload either. I use pages, but downloaded the correct format and saved it as an excel document. Even though it says it's an .xls document, I still get an error message.
Any advice on how to upload the guest list? I've tried everything I can think of.

My advice is not to use the knot tools/website.  They are notoriously terrible
  • Use a spreadsheet like Excel - much less hassle.

  • Why do people overly complicate things?  If it's already an Excel file, what is the point of uploading it to The Knot?  I find it hard to believe that TK's guest list manager (or whatever it is) is so incredible or advanced that it's better than Excel.  Very hard to believe.
  • Why do people bring threads back from the dead?!  This is from April 2013.
  • Saving it as a 1997-2003 Excel format and deleting all sheets except "Sheet1" worked for me.

    Meeganjo, thanks!!
  • I have tried everything and can't get it to work. Any other recent thoughts? I tried the recco above but no dice.

Follow this, @chofeller.  There are way too many posts about the Knot's tools not working.  It's not worth the hassle.
