Open House Style Reception

We would like to have an open house style reception so people can come and go, eat or don't eat, not feel obligated to spend their whole evening there.  Does anyone have expereince with this?  Does anyone know of a place in the los angeles area that will accomodate an open house reception?

My fiancé and I are planning on doing this.  We're doing a courthouse wedding in January 2014 with just close family, but have decided to do a casual Open House reception in the spring to celebrate with the rest of the family and friends, probably at home (most likely turn it into a cook-out, we'll see how many RSVP's I get when the time comes).  I'm planning on just finger food at the moment (again, this could change with the RSVP's).  Not planning on a traditional wedding cake, but a cupcake tree from our local bakery.  We want everything very casual, no frills or fluff.

Do make sure you put on your invitations when the Open House begins and ends, and what times your different activities during will be (first dance, cake cutting, etc.) incase they want to see all that.
