My fiance is a fire preformer and I am thinking about having him and his friends do a show near the end of the reception. Is this a good idea? Im worried some of our guests might think this type of a preformance doesn't belong at a wedding. Its nothing inappropriate, just some fire spinning to music. If anyone wants to take time to look on youtube, its called "poi".

Is this something that your FI wants to do?  Is this something his friends want to do?

If the answer is no to either of those questions then you shouldn't have it.

Also, if you do have the performance will your FI be able to enjoy the evening?  Meaning, will he be able to throw back a few drinks with his friends?  I doubt having a slight buzz from partying with your friends is a good thing when throwing fire around.

IMO, I hate any and all types of performances/entertainment at weddings.  I think they are a bit over the top and unnecessary.  I much prefer talking, laughing and dancing the night away with my friends then having to stand back and watch a performance that may or may not be entertaining to me.

Yeah, just because these types of performances and things are done on shows like "Four Weddings", doesn't mean it's appropriate.

I'd skip it for the reasons Maggie listed, as well as for the reasons that you'll be unlikely to find a recepton venue that would even allow it.

I see this ending a disaster You Tube video that pops up when "drunk groom on fire" gets Googled.

I am sort of kidding.  For me, I'd want my H and his friends to enjoy the open bar and not have to worry about flinging fire around later in the evening.  Hell, I think it's dangerous to give a toast too late in the evening for the same reason.

I think any sort of performance by the bride or groom is AWish.

That looks really cool. Sure, if he would like to do it, I don't see a problem with it. However, I don't think anyone would miss it if you didn't do it so I wouldn't bother if it means he is going to have to abstain from drinking (assuming he wants to drink) or spend too much time away from you, his family, and friends.

If they are not ok, it's a non-issue.  If they are, they will likely require a fire permit and various precautions.

I went to art school with a girl who does fire twirling/dancing.  I designed a performance for her once, at a show I produced and directed.  It was the finale.  I had to get a fire permit and pay for a fire department site visit to inspect the space, and also have buckets of water and extinguishes are certain intervales within the range of her performance. I also had to have a Boston Fire Department firefighter for the one hour duration of the show. I was able to pay for all of this by holding a per-show fundraiser.  I don't remember exactly what it cost (and this was back in 1995) but I think it was about a total of $500.00.

If you guys can do this, and the performers are on board, I don't see why not - I personally would love it - but I think some people will agree with the above posters that it is showy, and it is true that not everyone may be comfortable with it, in respect to the enviroment/vibe it creates.
