Custom Engagement Ring Nightmare

Re: Custom Engagement Ring Nightmare

  • I am so very sorry that you have gone through that, but this is not the end of the fight. When communications have broken down, contact the Better Business Bureau. They will help you the rest of the way. Keep all your communication from her, and the BBB will help you move forward into getting at least compensation.

By the way, this is not legal advice, I am not an attorney, nor do I claim to be.

Don't let this ruin the start to your engagement! Congratulations, and I hope this can get resolved for you with as little pain as possible. Don't give up.

  • TL;DR

She put out a request on a website for a ring designer for her Ering. She chose one and they collaborated on a custom ring using the baguettes from her previous wedding ring (she is re-marrying her exH). She sent in the ring to the designer, and they continued communication.

Designer sent her the wax mold of the ring and everything looked great. She finished paying on the ring, and then received it in the mail. As you can see from the pictures, it is not at all what she expected and is very poorly made.

Designer says no refunds, that she already did the work for stupid cheap and had to make a profit somewhere. Designer also said that she KNEW the baguettes were different sizes and it wouldn't come out right, but instead of talking to OP about it, she just cast the ring anyways.

Now communication has broken down completely, OP has a terrible Ering and now her old wedding ring is gone forever.

Ahhh, thank you KM!  I just didn't have the patience ;)

OP:  Get your credit card company on the phone (like yesterday) and dispute the charge.

    Good luck!

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Okay, at first glance (and when I first started reading) I assumed you were a crazy person, and that I would totally disagree with whatever this was about. Upon finishing, I still think you may be a crazy person, but I actually agree with you that you did not get what you were promised, and you should definitely dispute the charges/contact the BBB, etc.

  • Contact the BBB
    Contact your CC company/Bank

Then go to small claims court.  Bring receipts, the ring, communications with the seller (including the picture canted to cover the crooked work), etc.  It should be open and shut.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. You should definitely dispute this and report her. I am actually using the same website, custommade.com, to have a designer create my FI's wedding band. I've had nothing but great interactions with him so there are reputable people on there. I truly hope you can get this figured out. How many positive reviews did this woman have on there?
  • My fiance and I were considering using www.customade.com, and when I posted inquiries about a design I had in mind (cause I sort of did the design of my ring) we had about a dozen designers respond.

Easily75% of the people who responded had TERRIBLE, UGLY, CLUMSY work. I mean, I would not even commission a basic plain band from them.  I think this is a bit like ordering anything custom-made, sight-unseen, vendor-far-away.  Some people are saying they can do what they do not do well, or can't do at all - basically it's buyer beware. (For the record, the other 25% had lovely work, but they also charged more...because, yeah, you do get what you pay for.)

    Nevertheless...

Ditto the other posters - CANCEL your CC payment. Call the BBB.  Good luck!
