Wedding Invitations & Paper

Font and photo consistency?

How important is it that all the fonts and all the lettering and all the stationary and colors be the same?  I found an invitation online that I really liked and thought I had an rsvp card in the same style but apparently that exact card is no longer available.  There are others with similar fonts, etc, but not the same.  I can get the same weight paper, but the color will also be different.  Is this a major faux pas?  Also, does this apply to photos too? (i.e.; if i use a photo on a STD do I have to use the same photo on the invitaion?)  Thanks in advance for your response.

Re: Font and photo consistency?

  • There's no rule or expectation about making every little thing match. My sister is designing my STDs and invitations for FI and I. We're using a picture from our engagement session for the STD and a fun print for the invitation. Not everything will match but it doesn't matter. Don't let yourself get caught up in all the small details, you'll go crazy.
  • No, they do not have to match. I personally would want my RSVP to match or at least "go with" my invitation, though.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Ditto.  It would personally bother me if my RSVP didn't match my invitation, but I'm rather picky about those kinds of things.  As for photos, while they are common on STDs, I've personally never seen one on an invitation.

Thank you for your words of sanity!!!  I keep thinking it can't possibly be all that important other than as a matter of personal taste.  But everything I read is all about these pesky details.

Everyone else, thanks for your input!  I had the same feeling about the rsvp and the invite, but they do "go with" at least as far as theme, and the fonts are similar

  • As to the font difference, honestly, the only people who would probably notice are those with a solid knowledge of typography.  Unless you have a guest list full of graphic designers you should be pretty safe Laughing.  Things certainly do not have to be matchy-matchy to look polish and coordinated, but there should be some sort of continuity.  Also, if the colors are just *slightly* off, like difference in dye lots would be, it would probably be fine.  If it's a solid shade or so different you may want to find something with a more dramatic contrast or possibly pick up an accent color used in the invites.  That being said, an RSVP card that's slightly off will not ruin your invites and is probably not worth stressing about.  Good luck!
