Safety in Jamaica?

Hi!
My fiance and I loveee Jamaica and want to travel there for our honeymoon.  People keep telling it is unsafe.  Is it less safe than Mexico??  I find that hard to belive, but I have not been to Jamaica in year!

Thanks!

If you have been before, then you know what to expect. Nothing has changed there in the last year. I would not avoid a place you love and have experienced based on other's opinion (some of whom have probably never been.)

Are you planning on going back to the same place you were before?  If so, I agree with pp that you know what to expect.  Personally I felt less safe in Negril Jamaica than I did in Cancun Mexico.  But, that's my own opinion.

Totally agree with this. I, too, felt less safe in Jamaica than Cancun, but each person is really different. If you felt safe there and are going back to the same area, there is no reason to worry.

We only have been there for the day for cruise stops.  We just loved the people and relaxed atmosphere when we were there.

I just always thought that Mexico was more unsafe than Jamaica so I thought we should go there.  But if mexico is safer we will go there!!

The resort area in Cancun/Riviera Maya is definitely safe. As with being in any foreign destination, you should always be aware of your surroundings and don't do things that will call negative attention to yourself. Just travel smart and you'll be fine!

We've been to both. Jamaica was fine. Locals are friendly just very pushy. We left our resort on tours and were fine. We left the resort once on our own and promptly turned around and came back. Pushy people in our face is NOT our style. Especially on vacation. That being said, we are probably going back to Jamaica next year. We just returned three weeks ago from Cancun. I can assure you that Cancun is perfectly safe. The locals are friendly and the language barrier did not seem to be a problem at all. We stayed in the hotel zone and went out walking every night by ourselves. I have reviews and pics of both places in the link above my siggy pic.

I have been to Jamaica twice. As long as you do not leave the resort without an escort or on a group tour you will be fine. I went shopping where the locals have their shops and that was scary. But, we went on a tour and had a driver set up by the resort bring us around one of the days and we were fine.

Been to Jamaica numerous times over the last few years.  If you look up crime in the Caribbean Jamaica is at the bottom right next to Aruba and the Caymans.  USVI and Puerto Rico way at the top.  Aggressive yes, but that is not much different than what you find in SA if you have traveled there.  They are just trying to make a buck

JUST STAY OUT OF KINGSTON. You'll be fine.
