Incorporating our heritage

I want to incorporate both my grooms irish heritage and my norweigan heritage. I am having trouble coming up with ideas for the norwegian part. Food is one thing I was examining, as my family has always come together over meals that contained certain norwegian foods passed down from my grandparents. But... what else? Any ideas? I was thinking maybe even going some type of viking route... but that seems a little too halloween for me.

Re: Incorporating our heritage

  • My friends are very big on their heritage (he's scottish, she has a lot of russian).  They had cupcakes for their wedding, and stuck toothpicks in them that had the flags for those countries.  Subtle, but very nice.  What wasn't as subtle, and was a surprise to my friends, is that someone played bagpipes while they cut the cake.  The bagpiper was a friend of the groom who was invited anyway, and he brought his bagpipes and ran his idea by the groom's family beforehand.  My friends were completely surprised, and it was totally awesome!
  • are you planning on having a cocktail hour or a menu for dinner? if so you can easily integrate both of your heritages via food. you can also do that through drink. ireland has no shortage of whisky or beer and i'm sure norway has some drink that is typical. why not have special drinks at the bar too? or during the cake make special norwegian and/or irish cookies?

  • I think the main thing is to not try to force it. Your heritage should find its way into your wedding organically. Don't try to find ways to show people what your heritage is. Also, the gnome idea is really cute. I can see it being a conversation starter when people start to notice them.

  • I also "second" the kransekake...I had one at our wedding (I'm Danish).  There are lots of Scandinavian treats and cookies so you could always use that idea too.

As our favor for our guests we did a Danish jam-butter cookie wrapped in clear cellophane and an Indian (my H is Indian) cookie wrapped in clear cellophane and tied the two packages together with a ribbon that had a note "Two Cultures, Two Cookies."  It was a little labor intensive but guests thought it was cute.
  • I think you should do gnome &/or  leprochaun caketoppers and a gnome/eoprochaun cake theme.  I am sure you could find gnome salt and pepper shakers that you could paint over the holes and use, or even actual gnome or leprochaun cake toppers.  You could do the cake as a forest with mushrooms, ferns, pebbles....that seems like it would be 'enough.'  Etsy has a candy vendor who makes BEAUTIFUL cake decor.  Andie's Candies.  They make lovely ferns and mushrooms.  They may even make gnomes or similiar.

I also think you should use gnomes and leoprachauns as suggested, as suprising decor.  Little guys hiding in various parts of the venue.  I.E. coatroom.

I wouldn't do much more.  It could easily slide into looking like a Mini Golf venue.
