Re: Thoughts ?

  • I am ashamed to say that I loved Abercrombie & Fitch in my teen years.  In fact, the sweatpants I am wearing right now are Abercrombie & Fitch.  Sadly, for Mr. Jeffries, his sweatpants still fit my size 10/12 @ss!

I really hope they go bankrupt.

The fact that A&Fs CEO is an asshole just makes me feel even better for never having given them a single penny. Everyone wore that crap in college, and my university was exactly their demographic--rich white kids living in California. I knew that was their target market and that I wasn't part of it. Yeah, I can fit in their clothes, but I don't want to, and even now that I make good money, I would not pay $75 for a pair of jeans.

I believe he has the right to say what he said, even if I think it's idiotic. And we all have the right not to give his company any money. Hopefully public assholery will lead to a drop in sales and this guy getting fired.

ETA: I think this is similar to Chick-Fil-A management being against gay marriage. I won't ever give them my money, either.
    This 100%

Even when I could fit in their clothes, I wouldn't have been caught dead in them, b/c I didn't subscribe to the 'lifestyle' they represented. I grew up in an upper middle class white city with some of the most truly horrible examples of human beings. The sauntered around in their A&F clothes and stank to high heavens of that god awful perfume/cologne and never wanted to be apart of that. So I didn't shop there. I won't ever shop there, and I'll never let my kids shop there.

As to the bullying- I think the unsupervised no mans land that is the internet, coupled with its anonymity is a powder keg for preteen and teen angst. What once might have been 'kids being kids' on the playground or in the halls, has exploded. Some of what we call 'bullying' is a normal step in childhood development, and its up to adults to react in the correct way. But some of it crosses the line, and thats what needs to be stopped.

I actually think that for people with pre-teens/ teens this assholes statements can be a 'teachable moment' on a lot of levels- freedom of speech, power of the free market, identity issues and choosing good groups to identify with.

As a parent, I worry about bullying as my daughter gets older.  It was different labels when I was growing up, but we couldn't afford GAP and other brands that were trendy at my school.  The reality is, there were kids who did not wear name brand clothes and did not get bullied, and kids who had money and still were on the outside, socially.  While there is a component of outer style that relates to in group/out group dynamics, there are many other factors as well.

Parents, teachers, peer mentors are the ones setting the tone in a community and it is part of their job to help youth process the messages they are getting through media and advertising.  Let this jack ass mouth of like a prissy preteen bitch, it is not like he is the youth whisperer.  I think we have more power in the markets than we realize when we vote with our dollar to reflect our values.

  • I get what you're saying, but I disagree. They are both personal opinions that I (and many others) disagree with. Yes, A&F purposely doesn't make a product for larger women, whereas food is kind of one size fits all. Neither place has a guard turning people away. I think the root of the issue is the same, but the details differ because clothing and fast food are very different industries.
