Cowboy Hats

So I'm thinking of having all my BM wear cowboy hats for the ceremony...

Just kidding.

I want to get my brother a nice cowboy hat for his gift but I know zero about them. I'd like to get one that is suede (or felt? Is that nice too?) but I really don't want to spend much more than $100. Is that possible? I'm thinking more of a "dress" hat than a working hat, because that's when he would wear it. Although he does wear his boots constantly. (That boy was born in the wrong state I swear). What brands should I look at? Any guidance would be great because as I said I know nothing about this.

P.S. My mom is working on finding out his hat size for me, I know I need that at least.

Re: Cowboy Hats

  • If your getting someone a cowboy hat they should really be there to try it on. And make sure its the right. Fi ball cap size is different than the size of his cowboy hat. You could always get him a gift card to a tack shop or take him for a surprise trip.

You always know how to make me laugh in the morning.  Thx

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • For that price, you'll need to go felt; the nice ones are made of beaver felt.  Although, as we're heading in to the summer months, a nice straw hat wouldn't be remiss either.

The other reason you might want him involved is he needs to decide how he wants it shaped.  The shape of a hat is SUPER important to the wearer.

Just as an example Texas Hatters is a place I'd highly recommend (FI DOES want a hat for the wedding as well as more frequent wear).  But, you'll see quality comes with a price.  I glanced through quickly, and saw the least expensive one was $150.

I just wish they'd cut hats so that my ponytail wouldn't get smushed in them!  I'd wear one while riding, but damn, all my hair doesn't fit!

Thanks Sleeper I was afraid that might be the case. I guess I'll have to rethink the gift or the budget.

    Edited for spelling

Ok thanks! I was thinking of just getting one with my best judgement and making sure he had the gift receipt so he could exchange it if he wanted. I saw a couple that looked nice but it's hard to tell online if you don't know what you're looking for. I think I could go up to $150 I just have to think about it. I'll definitely check out Texas Hatters.

Excellent! :-) FI and I looked for western stuff (and good Texas bbq) when we were in San Antonio...silly us, didn't realize that we went exactly the wrong place for Texas "culture." Although, we absolutely loved it there.

Oh yeah that was the other thing! A dissapointing lack of southern accents. We will be going back at some point because we are totally in love with it. So I may take you up on that!
