Changing stuff other than your name

My fiance and I were wondering what exactly do you need to change aside from the name, i.e. life insurance, car insurance, etc...

I am having a hard time searching for that stuff but all I can come up with is the dang name change info that I have read a hundred times!

Thanks!

Re: Changing stuff other than your name

  • Um... everything that has your name on it? Credit cards, bank accounts, insurance as you said, whatever bills come in your name. Doctor's records, I guess, but I just told mine when I made appointments that my name had changed.

  • Well you eventually have to change everything that has your name on it but in the beginning focus on the major things like bank accounts, mortgage and insurances.  Also inform your work of your name change.

I still have some credit cards in my maiden name and will eventually get around to changing them but I am not in any huge rush.

Changing your name on everything takes time so don't be too worried if you don't get everything change right away.

  • I'm not quite sure what your question is.

When you legally change your name, you change your name.  Everything that involves your name needs to be changed.  Some need to be changed sooner than others.  The searches I've done have been very helpful with this.  They've said what needs to be changed, and given a priority list as to which ones need to be done ASAP.  My first plan of attack is a new SS card, License, bank accounts, insurance, passport.  The financial and ID-related stuff, essentially. You also need to do this for employment, voter registration, medical records, any loan companies, alumni offices and/or current colleges.  I'm also alerting the post office because they get confused seeing a different name than what they're used to seeing.  There's more that I'm forgetting, I'm sure.  What you find online really is a big help.

    I hope that helps!
  • Everything with your name on it. Right now my maiden name is still on our utilities, but I'm not worried about those. I'll change them when I get around to it.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Social Security Card needs a name change. Like PP's said - bank accounts. I changed the account I used most often first so I could get new checks ordered ASAP. As each bill came in I updated my information when I paid it.

  • I changed my name at the social security office first, then the DMV, then the bank, and I did all of my credit cards and utilities over the phone on the same day.

I also changed it at work, so my medical benefits changed over. I already had my partner as my sole beneficiary on life insurance and 401k, but you should consider that as well.  I increased my life insurance by an additional $100,000.00.  Before, I just had enough to bury me and pay off my house.  I wanted to leave a little extra since I am the primary earner in the house.

You should also think about things like passports, and your blockbuster video card.  ;)

Jealous of that.  About 4 of my credit cards want a copy of my marriage license before they will change my name on the account.  Needless to say I will get around to those when I have nothing else better to do.  Having my maiden name on the account hasn't stopped them from cashing my checks with my married name so I guess they aren't too concerned with it as well.

Wow !! I got lucky !!   No one even questioned it.  And they all offered to add my partner to the accounts over the phone !
  • I never change my name on my condo deed or mortgage.  Way too much of a PITA.  It was not big deal when I sold the condo.  I just had to sign an affidavit that I now go by the new name or that I use to go by the old name.  I don't remember, but it wasn't a big deal.

I also didn't change my email that is my last name.  I have my email address out there I have no desire to every change that.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I changed everything as I got to it.  Work and driver's license first. SS card not until about 7 months later (some states require you to do that first).  Changed over all my utilities once we moved, which was only a few months after our wedding.  I haven't changed over my student loans yet because they want a copy of my marriage license and I'm too lazy to go find it.  Like Maggie said, they have no problem cashing my checks with another name, so it's not too big a deal.

I changed everything as I got around to it. I did the major ones- SS, DL, bank, CC at the beginning. Then I did work and insurance. I just got around to getting a new passport last month.  As I keep getting mail from places I change it as I go.  I even had to change my name on my exotic animal permit for our hedgehogs!  I still get magazines in my old name though.

I didn't change my name on our deed to our house.  I was told that it wasn't necessary at the time when we closed (we closed about a month before I was married).  I only changed it on the mortgage because it was super easy.  I called them up and told them I got married on X date.  The woman was extremely nice and happy for me and quickly made the change.  But if it was going to be a pain I wouldn't have bothered.

  • Look online for lists for people who are moving and need to change their address.  That should give you a start on what may need to be changed name wise.  Keep adding to that list as you think of more that are specific to you and cross them off as you change it with each group.  Remmber things like school Alumni associations, organ donation organizations, if you're signed up with them, subscriptions, etc.

  • I think you all may have missed my question or I worded it wrong. I don't need name change information because I can find that anywhere.

I need to know who I or my fiance needs to notify when we are married. For example, we would need to add each other as other drivers on our car insurance. I would need to be added to his beneficiaries on life insurace.. Stuff like that. Or is that all?
