How to announce our engagement without inviting to the wedding?

Hi gals! I'm newly engaged (YAY!) and looking for some advice!

My fiance and I want a small wedding--just close friends and family, but I come from a BIG family. I want to send something to my family members announcing our engagement, but my question is.....Is it possible/acceptable to send engagement announcement cards without inviting them to the wedding?

Basically, is there a way to nicely put something on an engagement announcement card that simultaneously says "we love you" and "our wedding will be so super small that we unfortunately can't invite you?!" hahaha...Not in those words, of course. But you guys get my point! Is there a nice, loving, sincere way to do that?

Thanks so much, ladies!  :)

****EDIT*****
You guys gave awesome answers, SO helpful! Thanks so much, from a beginner bride who knows nothing about weddings! haha  :)  xo!

  • We got engaged in July. We called our parents, siblings, close relatives, and best friends (basically, the VIPs) and then changed our relationship status on Facebook.

We did photo Christmas cards that year and used one of our engagement pictures. (You can see my ring in the picture, but it isn't in-your-face obvious.) I figured between the word-of-mouth network, Facebook, and the picture on the Christmas card, we were covered.

My parents are throwing an engagement party for us and inviting only the closest friends/family....because they will definitely be invited to the wedding. You can do the same...have your parents (or friends) host a small party if they'd like, just tell them to keep it small. Congrats and welcome!
