Reception Venue - Old Carpeting - Dated look

Hello all - we've found a great venue, with a very helpful owner, that's within our budget...only problem, it's dated.   The carpet is from the 1970s easily and the chairs are probably from the 1980s.  Everything else is great about it but I can't get over the dated feeling.   Is there a way to spruce it up?  I mentioned getting seat covers for the chairs, but my fiance laughed at spending $850 'just on seatcovers!'.  So no seat covers.   We haven't put a deposit down yet, but are close to it as it's the only place we've found that meets our needs and doesn't completely kill our entire budget ($10,000).   Any thoughts or ideas would be so helpful!

Re: Reception Venue - Old Carpeting - Dated look

  • You are over thinking this.  Once the room is filled few people will notice the chairs or the floor.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Nobody will notice. I think our floor was brown tile and our chairs were brown, but I couldn't pick them out of a lineup. If you like the venue otherwise, don't let this be the deal breaker!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I agree with PPs. I was at a wedding just two weekends ago - absolutely no idea what the floor, chairs, walls, etc. looked like. I remember the food, the fun, and the people, but not the room.

  • With the right decorations no one will notice the dated. Plus everyone will have their bottoms in the chairs anyways! You can also use flowers on lining to cover up an ugly carpet.
  • Thank you for the help and you're all right, I noticed because there was no action in the place, but it would be different if the room were filled.

I'll admit, I would notice. Because I am the sort of person who is bothered by hideous carpet. It was one of the things I really paid attention to when we visited venues. But while I notice it when I go to weddings, it doesn't affect how much I enjoy the wedding, or how I view the couple. As for the chairs, the only time I ever notice the chairs is when there ARE covers. Because it's such a PITA to pull those chairs out, and I always think "well there is a huge waste of money."

  • Hahaha - Daria, so true!  I hadn't thought about that, only the fact the chairs were ick to me, but yes, with the seat covers it makes it so much harder to maneuver.
