Torn between two dresses

So I tried the first dress on at VW in thoughts that if I loved it I could get it made by a local seamstress, as I certainly couldn't afford a VW. Getting it made I could also make all the adjustments to make it the "perfect" dress I envisioned-- although it makes me nervous to not be able to try on the final product before purchasing. Then I tried on the second dress last weekend and fell in love. The only thing I would change is maybe for the neckline to be a bit more sweetheart cut. And I don't know if I like the bottom of the second dress as much as the first. Although I feel I might just be looking for things at this point. I'm just so confused. Would love to get your feedback on what dress you all like. I'm going for a vintage theme for my wedding if that helps at all, as I keep reminding myself of that every time I analyze each dress.

I think the second dress really suits you - very pretty. Also, I'm not a fan of the crumb-catcher type of neckline on the first one. The neckline on the second dress looks great. I wouldn't change it. But you have to feel wonderful in it. If you do, you can't go wrong with the second dress and you already know what the finished product looks like. Edit: I might suggest adding a belt to the second one, like on the first dress.
  • The second dress is really pretty, but I don't the vintage vibe from it.

  • Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

And @cmgr --an A-line is not flattering on my body. Crazy that you think the mermaid isn't flattering on me, as that is what every consultant has recommended for me.

I think I'll just choose my gown regardless of the theme I'm going for with the wedding, I'm sure it will all fall together beautifully regardless. :)
  • I really like the second on you as well. And by "vintage" theme, do you maybe mean " 50's Hollywood"? If so, I totally get the old Hollywood movie star vibe from both dresses. You also have a fantastic figure and can pull off the shape. I think it looks great on you.

I'm not a fan of whatever is going on with the bust in the first dress. And while I couldn't pull off the fluffiness of the bottom of either dress, I really love the hem of the second dress on you!
  • Honest question: if you don't like the neckline or the bottom of the 2nd dress, what exactly is it that you DO like about it??

  • Thank you so much, @ojitosverdes! I appreciate your feedback. I just love the vintage/boho weddings I've looked at, but not really into the gowns I've saw brides wear.

Thank you, @liatris2010 ! I lovelovelove the bottom of the first dress as well, and if I went with the option to get it custom made I would leave out the crumb catcher and get a sweetheart neckline.

@jenn5628 --I never said I didn't like the neckline or skirt of the second? I wanted a deeper sweetheart neckline, but that could be fixed I believe, and if not I'd be OK with it bc I still like the top. And I just said I wasn't sure if I liked the first bottom more than the second. I like the funkiness of the bottom of the second, and the fit, and the detail, etc.
  • I am not a fan of the second dress.  I don't like where the skirt starts to flair out.  It almost seems to begin at your calf.  And I don't like the texture of the bottom.

I think the first dress is very pretty on you.  I am not a fan of the crum-catcher neckline but I think the softness of the lace and the layers on the bottom is very pretty and it really suits your shape.  Have you considered seeing if you could find something similar by a less expensive brand instead of having it made?  Just a suggestion because sometimes getting a dress custom made won't save you nearly as much as you may think.

  • I actually tried on a gown thats like the 1st dress.. lace with an orgnza ish overlay, but it was sweetheart .. I believe it was a provinas..
  • maybe not.. I cant remember, but it was about 1,800 I wish I could remember who it was by )=
  • @crysspears I just did a little digging-- was it the Provinias Duende? That's beautiful, and definitely reminds me of the first! Thanks so much for the suggestion. :)
  • Agree w/ Liatris.  I like the first dress a lot more except for the neckline, but that could be tweaked pretty easily.  I strongly dislike the bottom portion of the 2nd dress--it looks cheap and sloppy.  There are so many gorgeous mermaid styles out there; I think you should keep looking.

I definitely like the VW best. I had my dress custom-made for just under $1300. My designer made a mock-up in cheap fabric first, so I did get to try it on to check out the silhouette, and then there was another fitting before it was finished.
  • I like the VW but not the crumbcatcher neckline. I feel it does nothing for your shape on top. Try looking into cheaper alternatives with the same elements as the VW like some of the other girls suggested.

  • I love the first one on you and overall. I think its a beautiful dress, and I think if you had it made custom to make the changes you desire you would find yourself incredibly happy :)
    gl with your decision!

  • i think the second dress looks much nicer on u. the first dress just looks kinda blah. it dosent have  any shape. it makes u look like u have no curves at all. in the second dress u look curvy and beautiful. u said it ur self, u fell in love with it. dont go with the first one that u would have to change to make it "the perfect dress", go with the one that u love!
  • I like the first dress on you best as I think it flatters your figure
  • I agree with @CMGr that neither dress evokes a vintage feel.  If I had to pick, I like the first one better.  There's something about the first picture of the second dress that's just awkward and unflattering IMO.
  • I see why you're torn!  At first I thought second dress, but then I looked at them again and now I'm thinking first dress.  I don't think you can go wrong either way, as both look good on you.  And I agree with the PP about the vintage Hollywood feel -- I think both capture a bit of that glamour and style.

All things being equal, I'm going to cast my vote for second dress, simply because the first involves the handmade element, a stress factor that you might not want to add to the usual stresses of wedding planning (off-the-rack is all the stress level I know I can handle!).

Some of the other posters had some great suggestions on similar styles.  Not to sound like an ad for The Knot, but have you looked through the Summer 2013 magazine?  As always, it's loaded with mermaid gowns -- many of which would certainly look great on you.

    Hope this helps!

I completely disagree with CMGr that you should do an A-line.  If you have the figure for a mermaid -- rock it!

That being said, I hate crumb-catchers.  The rest of the dress is beautiful...but it's called a crumb-catcher. I even hate the name. Ugh... :)

  • Ah, thank you for all the help-- you guys are great! I went and tried on the second dress again for my mom last weekend and she loved it-- but wasn't convinced of it being "the one". And the second time I tried it on I wasn't feeling it as much as the first time. Then yesterday as my FI was looking through pics on my phone from our engagement party he accidentally scrolled too far and saw that dress. A little traumatizing for me, but I am choosing to see it as a sign. I had an appointment with a seamstress yesterday and it went amazing. We are on the same page and I'm pretty sure that's the route I'm going to take-- using the bottom of gown one that I love, with a lacy sweetheart bodice-- minus the crumb catcher. Thanks again for all the feedback! :)
