Thank you cards for wedding gifts before the wedding?

Our wedding is in 4 weeks. Gifts are starting to arrive from our registry. I began writing thank you cards for them today, but just stopped because I haven't received RSVP cards yet from some of the gift givers (they have 2 more weeks). Then I thought that maybe I shouldn't already be opening the boxes? I'm not planning on using any of the gifts yet; just trying to stay organized with all these boxes and on top of Thank You cards if I can.

Is it okay to send Thank You cards prior to the wedding for gifts? I'd hate to wait 4 weeks to send them.

Re: Thank you cards for wedding gifts before the wedding?

  • Send them! Just don't mention anything about coming/not. Opening gifts is fine because you'll want to check that it's correct and in good shape.

Awesome job for staying on top of it and getting them out quickly.
  • You're correct to open them and send thank yous right away.  If you're unsure of their attendance just don't mention it in the card.
  • Ditto PPs. Stay as on top of the thank yous as you can now, since after the wedding you'll have even more to do! When I send them out for guests I know will be coming, I mention how much we are looking forward to seeing them in a few weeks. Those for guests who I don't know about, I just thank them for the gift.

  • I had this same question!  I was thinking I would get thank-you cards and work on them as we go to stay organized.  Now I see I'm of similar mind with other brides.

  • I was in the same boat as you a few weeks ago, OP. Open the gift and send a thank you as soon as you can. It's fine that you don't know whether or not they're coming. You can always say, "hope to see you at the wedding!"

  • For your own sanity, the more you can do as the gifts come in, the better it is for YOU. Also, more polite, obv.
  • Yes, open the gifts (but don't use them) and send out those thank-you notes ASAP.
