Getting to know the couple activity/game at the reception?

Actually I HAVE seen the shoe game and I think it's a terrible idea. No, guests are not physically asked to come up and play but their attention is implied. Being forced to WATCH the game is still participating. It's not fun to be forced to watch a game going on instead of socializing, mingling, etc. And if you come back and say no one will be forced to watch and people can wander around talking while this is going on, then my question is, what's the point of it in the first place?
