NGISR - Beach Read Suggestions

Hello.  H and I are headed on vacation this Saturday.  Any suggestions for a good beach read?  I want something brainless that I don't have to pay much attention to.  I don't read much - the last books I read were 50 Shades Part 1 and The Help.

TIA!

Re: NGISR - Beach Read Suggestions

  • I actually really enjoyed The Hunger Games trilogy (I think it's pretty brainless reading considering the reading level). You could also check out Jenny Lawson's "Let's Pretend This Never Happened".

  • My guilty beach reading (the stuff I generally put on my kobo, so no one sees the cover) is anything by Nicholas Sparks, or the Sookie Stackhouse series (the books the True Bloos series are based on. I don't watch the show, but the books aren't bad at all)

    Enjoy your beach time!

  • I enjoyed reading the hunger games as well (except the 3rd one, which I was not a fan of).  If you like mystery/crime i recommend Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series, starting with the Redbreast (yes, the name of the main character is terrible, but it's scandanavian so I cut 'em some slack).  I'm just starting the new Dan Brown book (Inferno) and it's pretty entertaining thus far.
  • Summer Sisters by Judy Blume (yes, the children's author but no it's not a kids book) is a great beach read! I'm reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn right now and I can't put it down! SO good. I wouldn't say it's a mindless book per say but it really has my attention. Nicholas Sparks books are always good options too. The last one I read was Safe Haven . That was pretty good.

  • Ditto Maribeth.. I read gone girl so fast.
Vince Flynn and his series about the character Mitch Rapp ( I loved those books and there is a lot)
Ken Follett has a few out that are LONG, and so worth it (Pillars of the Earth, and World Without End [sequel] - Pillars is my fav book, read it at least 7-8 times). He also has 2 others currently that are part of a trilogy and longer (Fall of Giants, Winter of the World, _________ 3rd book hasn't been released yet).
    • Defending Jacob was AMAZING (by William Landay).
    • The Kingmakers Daughter (Philippa Gregory)
    • Lee Childs has a series starring a character called Jack Reacher (the books=way better then that silly movie with Tom Cruise). Lets be serious Jack Reacher is 6'6-8ish military cop and hulking and loomy.. Tom Cruise is 5'6 and... abercrombie. So the wrong character... *climbs off soapbox*

  • I would suggest Bossypants by Tina Fey because it's hilarious and fun. For fiction I recommend Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen because it's a great story. I third the Hunger Games Trilogy and for other series, I loved the Millenium Trilogy (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books). Also Harry Potter is fun at any age if you've never read them and they are good stand alone books if you just want to pick one.

If you're into non-fiction I recommend Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, Devil in the White City by Erik Larson and The Good Nurse by Charle Graeber.

    Hope you find something!

  • An easy non-fiction read is "Is everyone hanging out without me?" by Mindy Kaling.

I also really recommend The Hunger Games series if you haven't read them, but there are a lot of cliff hangers through out the books.  So if you don't want to spend all of your vacation reading, I'm not sure it is the best suggestion.  Of course, I am pretty book obsessed, so other people not get quite so caught up in the need to finish a book NOW.

The Sookie Stackhouse novels are definitely beach reading material.

This is fantastic - thanks everyone.  I am going to get a few of these and will report back like a virtual book club.  I just learned how to use polarized sunglasses to read an ipad in the sun, although I'll probably buy the paperbacks instead.

  • Totally mindless and hysterical - Jennifer Lancaster any of her memoirs. Bitter is the new black, bright lights big ass, such a pretty fat. Mostly all gis-woe related too
