Candy Buffet: How Much to Buy?

So, we are doing a candy buffet at the reception and I've got no idea how much candy to buy. I can guess that it's a per-person amount by weight, but does anyone know how much? Does the amount of options offered change the total volume? Ex: 7 types of candy vs 11. Clearly, leftover candy is NOT a tragedy, but running out early would be!

I think the kicker here is to buy small bags. Go to a party supply store and check out the options. If have you large bags available (think paper lunch bag size) guests will fill them to the brim with 30-40 pieces of candy.

With a smaller bag, 10-15 pieces per guest of wrapped candy is probably logical.

  • Totally agree with itz - smaller bags to stuff with candy. People don't necessarily need to walk out of there with enough to last a month (or enough to last one night, by a young trick-or-treater's standards). I bought 30 lbs of saltwater taffy (around 110 pieces) for 175 guests and bought little bags that should hold around 7-8 pieces with the expectation that guests will eat some at the wedding, too.

I'd say plan to provide 8-12 pieces of candy per person.

  •  We are also doing a candy bar for our wedding! :) Our decorator we've hired, (who will be doing set up), said for around 120 people we were going to need about 40lbs of candy. Which I believe is just under 19kg. So for the amount of glass containers we have, we choose how many varieties of candy we want, and split them by pounds into each container by how much they can hold. I agree that you definitely may want a little more candy than you need, than chance not having enough! Our decorator said we should have some left over, but 40lbs was a safe bet. :)
  • one candy bar per guest. one small bag of candy per guest. one lollipop per guest. Chocolate drink.

half what you need of hard candy...in large bags.

make the left over candy your favor.

  • You can have favor bags set up on a table. You can even use it guest seating instead of a card.
