Dr. B diet

Gahh!! Everytime I'm watching a show online I see those commercials for the Dr. Bernstein diet.
And it's driving me nuts.

Throughout my education in Human Nutritiion, we learned that at most a person should lose 2.5 lbs a week. That's at most. It's generally recommended to lose 1 lb per week. 1lb = 3500 calories, so lowering calorie intake by 500 each day should in theory help you lose 1 lb per week.

Then I see these commercials which say you can lose 30 lbs in a month, and it's medically supervised.
As someone with a Nutrition background, I don't trust it one bit.
I even went to their website to see if I could find out more information. It doesn't give any idea of what this medically supervised diet would even be.

What's your opinion on the Dr. Bernstein Diet? What have you heard about it?
(I'm definitely NOT going to try it, I'm just curious to see if there's any more skeptics about it here - I'd rather work hard to achieve my weight loss goals)

Re: Dr. B diet

  • Gimmick gimmick gimmick. Even if you successfully lose that weight there's no way to keep it off. It sounds a lot like Medical Weight loss, and even though I lost 90lbs in 7 months it's STILL a crock of shit because I gained almost all of it back when I started eating like a normal person again.

  • I don't always think its a crock - if you look at shows like Biggest Loser, and Extreme Weightloss Makeover (or whatever with Chris Powell) you see these morbidly obese people losing 90+ lbs in 3 months. Obviously these people have a ton of weight to lose, and they are in a situation where it is feasible for them to do so.

So I don't agree that it is all BS. I don't know enough about the Dr. B diet to know what it consists of, however when you have THAT much to lose, if you start burning that many calories and eating the way you should be it will come off like that.

The problem arises when people expect to be able to eat the same way when they significantly decrease their energy expenditure. If you decrease your EE significantly it will decrease your metabolism, therefore decreasing the number of calories needed to sustain vital function.
