A Less Formal Dress For In October

I am getting married in October 2014 but we are not doing things traditionally. We are having a small private ceremony at city hall on a wednesday and then a larger party on saturday with lunch.

I grew up dreaming of wearing a gown but I realize that I would feel overdressed in the situation. I am trying to find a less formal white dress (could even be a beautiful sun dress) that I could wear to the ceremony and the party as well as for professional pictures after the ceremony. I would really prefer something that falls below (or close to) my knees and is made of a nice material.

We live in a more Northern area of Canada but it isn't too cold during this time that I'd be frozen with nothing more than a light shall on top.

If anyone has any suggestions for where I should be looking or has seen anything similar I would appreciate some guidance as I live in a very small town and have little in local options.

  • I've ordered a lot of dresses online for other occasions and if you know your true size, you can always shop online. While a pain, things can be returned by mail.

Many bridesmaid dresses come in white or off white. Also, "destination wedding dresses" tend to be a bit more casual. If these are long, hopefully you can find a seamstress in your area, or ask a family member or friend who knows how to sew to shorten it for you.

Not sure of the stores available in your area. I have returned things to Target, Kohl's, Macy's, Penney's stores that I have ordered online.

    Good luck.

David's Bridal is a large chain store with a good website.  They do have stores in Canada.  Prices are in US dollars.

The only thing non-traditional about your wedding will be having a reception several days after the ceremony,  Why is this?  Thousands of vrides are married in courthouse ceremonies every year in the USA.

The reception is not several days after our ceremony. Ceremony on Wednesday and then fast forward 3 days for the party/reception. The reason that I am having it so much later is because I want to make sure guests (particularly out of towners) can make it as we don't have a large guest list to begin with. There are also known issues with father in law unable to make it to ceremony and grandparents who would only be able to make a weekend wedding. We also figured it'd be cheaper to have a Saturday lunch instead of a Wednesday dinner.

Also, thank you so very much for that link. I've looked at the cheaper dresses that are under 200-300 and many of them don't seem too formal and a few seem almost exactly as I've pictured in my head!
