Kids and Shoes (Judgment and a confession)

I saw a maybe 9-y-o at WalMart yesterday in a pair of low-heeled black pumps. WTF.

I used to wonder where these little kids got these shoes, because even when the kids' section isn't super-appropriate, it isn't super-INappropriate, either.
Then I took Bacon sneaker shopping the other day. She's in a size 7. Women's.

Confession: She should probably have a 7.5, maybe even an 8 (for growing purposes), but I couldn't handle her having shoes my size or bigger. At least not until she's in double age digits.

  • Ha!

I can't even remember shopping in the kids shoe section.  There was just a few years of normal ladies sizes in elementary school before sent to the drag queen corner in the back of the store.

And how much longer until she beats you on height?
  • I don't know what we're going to be able to get her for school. But at least now she'll have to learn to tie a shoe: grownup ones don't come with velcro.

Not long. She's up to my chest - like, almost to my shoulder. She got all the tall genes (two of my brothers are over 6 feet, so they are there). I told her she's going to grow up tall and skinny and have to be a model. She made a face at me for that one.

  • I can't believe you've got her in a shoe that might be possibly too small and you're admitting it.
  • god forbid your child be measured for the shoe by The Man just because your vanity can't stand it.

  • Wow. I thought Alexander had a big foot. 2.5 years and a size 11 in kids.

  • They're not too small. They're slightly too big - but I would ordinarily buy them even bigger, so we won't have to buy new ones as often.

Holy crap!  DD1 is only in a 10.5, maybe an 11 in a month or two.  DD2 is just now getting into a 6, but she's always had really tiny feet.
  • DS is the same as Loveshine's kid. Although strangely, the flip flops I got him at Target are only 10s. So maybe that brand runs big or something. But then again, my kid is already like 1/2 my height.

Jeebus, 6let is an 11 and we just put M2 in a 6.
  • My first pair of shoes (as a baby/toddler) were a size 7 children. As a 1 month old, my folks took an angled picture of me with the camera by my feet and sent it to family with the caption "We hope she grows into her feet." I've a photo at age 3, in the Easter dress my Grandma sent me. I'm wearing little girl's low, wide heeled shoes. My feet look like mini boats.

By 3rd grade ( 9 yrs old) I wore a size 7, same shoe size as my mom. Luckily for her, I liked penny loafers too (yes I was that much of a dork kid), so she and I could swap shoes. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Heels were allowed, but only for special occasions, like a grown up dinner with my parents for a birthday, or to Christmas/Easter Church services. I was also under a "height" rule. Mom is 5' 3".

The rule was I couldn't be taller than her until after I finished elementary school (age 11). We were eye level when I was in 4th and 5th grade. Two weeks after I finished elementary, I gained a half inch. I'm now at 5' 5.5" and it's always entertaining when I "look down at her"- she smacks me and calls me her little stink bug. The joke is now on me- FI is 6' 3" and I swear he grows when I'm not looking. Though it does make for adorable moments- Grandma is now 4'5" down from 5'6" (take that calcium ladies!) and upon meeting her, he immediately got down on one knee to be at her height so she could hug him and "see" his face (she's 99.9% blind, and this way she could touch him with details on exact eye and hair color and form a picture).

Now in my mid/late 20s, I wear anything between a 9 and an 11, depending on the make and model of the shoe (it is amazing how some don't get the "standard" size thing) however most of my shoes are consistently a size 9.5. I've worn this size since about 8th grade. I'm less concerned about the shoes kids are wearing these days and more about the trashy clothes they market to kids, especially little girls!

You're 5'5" and wear a size 10, give or take? Wow. That is rough. At least I have that "keeps me from tipping over" reason for my giant feet. :(

The good news is that between the internet and the increased social acceptance of drag queens and the transgender community, larger sizes are a LOT easier to find these days. I found some great 3" pinkish/coral wedges at payless, then was somehow amused to read the online reviews. 2 of the 3 were from men.

also? barefoottess.com. Pricey, but at least there are choices. And with Zappo's letting you filter by size, it makes the hunting much easier.

  • Eh, I'm the same height with the same size foot. I don't have any issues.
  • I don't get this.  It's a shoe size.  Who cares what size it is?  As long as you like the shoe.

Granted, I do feel bad when people can't get shoes b/c of their sizes but I've heard people complain they can't get them when they can't get them small/large enough and I've heard people with "average" complain b/c all of those sizes are gone first.

So again, who cares about the size?  They're feet, just make sure they don't stink and if you're showing feet skin, they need to be maintained.

And for what it's worth I was a 7 until about three years about and jumped to an 8.

There is a social stigma. Sure, there are the occasional fetishists, but in general, it's not good to have big feet. (Probably because big feet aren't dainty and ladylike, so, you know, fuck that and all, but it's still out there.) remember the swimmer from he last Olympics? She was a freaking OLYMPIC SWIMMER, and all people could talk about were her big feet.

Also? There is many a shoe that is super cute In a Size 6 but looks like a damn aircraft carrier when you find it in an 11. It's sad.
