officiant invited to reception?

We're wondering if it's normal to invite your officiant to the reception for dinner. We found our officiant online, met with her a couple times, she's not a family friend or anything!
We invited her to the rehearsal dinner and we're paying for her there, but would it be rude if we don't invite her to the reception??

Re: officiant invited to reception?

  • We invited ours, but I have known him since high school. I know a lot of times they dont stay anyways! I don't think it would be rude to not invite them, but it would be nice to invite them!
  • I think it would be nice to invite the officiant even if s/he declined. I have known ours since 2005 so about 8 years. And FI has known her for about that long as well.
  • I think it would be nice to invite her and her SO if she has one.  However, you're not obligated to do so since you only have a business relationship with her.  The choice is really up to you.

We're inviting our priest, but that's partly because he's been a good friend of the family for so long.

If it's not a family friend or someone you grew up with I personally don't see a reason to invite her.

We found our officiant online as well and just met him once. He's super cool, but he's not coming for the rehearsal (DOC is just running it) and said he leaves right after the ceremony.

  • Luckily this was a no brainer for us. Our officiant is FI's brother. I feel that if you found them online, it's not necessery to invite them to the reception.

Us too. Our officiant is actually the owner of our venue, who happens to be a family friend of FI's. If it is someone you know in any way, I would invite him/her. If this person is just someone there to marry you, it's up to your discretion.
