What's proper etiquette for a backyard wedding? Write a letter to the neighbors or not?

edited June 2013 in Connecticut
14 days out from my wedding and I am not sure what to do about one thing... We are having our wedding in our backyard, about 85 guests and I feel like I should let the neighbors know what's going on so that they call us if there's an issue and not the cops. It's a small wedding and I don't even know all my neighbors so inviting them is obviously out of the question... And It will also be addressed from our landlords... Thoughts??

  • Do you have ample parking for your guests so they wont park in your neighbors driveways or parking spots? Have you researched noise ordinance laws and ensured you wont be breaking any rules (music too loud, or too late at night)?  If so, I don't see the need to tell your neighbors anything. They'll figure it out soon enough. If someone does call the cops, they'll just show up and someone can politely let them know you're having a wedding. You could also tie some wedding balloons to the mailbox / front door.
  • Our neighborhood is in the woods so we are not on top of our neighbors, and have street parking that won't interfere with their driveways and yards. Music has to be over at 10 which is the plan, we'll have some signs up and what not so they should get the gist. Thanks for the input!
  • Jess, I was wondering the same thing as we are looking into having a backyard wedding. I figured I would just let ur next door neighbors on each side know ahead of time, but the others I figured would be no biggie. Which caterers did you go with?

    Have a wonderful time! :)

  • I wouldn't but thats just me... because I know my neighbors are amazing and they will never EVER complain, but if you feel like there is someone who complains all the time or just don't like you, let them know. - G
  • So I ended up not doing the letter and our landlords told the neighbors directly behind us and we had zero problems! It was an amazing day!!

We had Black Eyed Sally's do our catering, everyone went nuts over the food!
  • Glad you had a great day!

Didn't even think of Black Eyed Sally's for catering...interesting!! Affordable? How much pp?

  • What kinda foods did you go with? I loooove their pulled pork! ;)
  • totally affordable! and seriously delicious!

One of their combos is 16ish a person, but I added more food choices and had them do crab cakes and fried chicken for cocktail hr. All in all I think we spend 2,500 for 85 people on catering. They charge 150 per worker that comes to the site. Dara was great to work with and we had zero issues.

Cocktail hr had cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, crab cakes and fried chicken

Dinner had, grits, green beans, garlic mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, pulled pork, brisket, jambalaya and veggie jambalaya. oh! and cornbread!!
