How to put a 'Plus One' on an Invite

I apologize if this is posted somewhere, but where and how do you indicate a 'plus one' along with a wedding invitation?  We're designing our invitations and I can't believe I don't know this.

Re: How to put a 'Plus One' on an Invite

  • This is what I did when I addressed mine.  On the outer envelope, I only put down the name of the person I was primarily inviting.  On the inner envelope, I wrote Mr. Lastname and Guest.  I only did this if I didn't know who our guest would bring with them.  If they were in a relationship, I put that person's name on the outer as well.

Are you doing inner envelopes?  If you're not, then my advice isn't really too helpful.  I'm not 100% sure what the best thing to do for that is.  Going with my gut, I'd put "Mr. First Last and Guest" on the outer envelope.  But then again, only married couples should share the same line on the outer envelope.  Idk.  Someone else will post I'm sure about what to do if you're not using an inner envelope.  They'll be able to give you a bit more help!

  • We didn't have inner envelopes so we addressed them as Mr. John Smith and Guest.

I know there are a bunch of etiquette rules that go along with who should be on which lines, yadda, yadda, yadda, but IMO as long as everyone's names are spelled correctly and you make sure to only include those that are invited on the invite then you are fine.
