Re: New Rule

  • I apologise if this is how anyone says this, but it really really bugs me when people say 'I could care less'. That doesn't mean what you think it means! If you could care less, then you must actually care since there are apparently other things you have even less care for.
    It's 'I couldn't care less'!

I am sure I am guilty of this or some form of this at times by sheer brainwashing! :) When I was first getting to know my best girl friend, who is a Vet assist and a huge rat lover,  she would say, "I could give a rats ass...!" One day I told her that she is actually saying she does care. She informed me that by saying she could give a rats ass, a rat lover, shes pissed off to the point that she would give away something she loves, proving she doesnt give a crap!  She says it much. Quite the mental challenge for me when she says it...even in repeating it!

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine!
  • I hate it when people learn how to correctly say a word in another language and still say it wrong, like mispronouncing gracias you guys were talking about.

I have a cousin who mispronounces a local Mexican restaurant name. It has a double-L and she pronounces it as an L instead as a Y. I corrected her once but have since quit. I took a year of Spanish in high school, two semesters in college and have visited South America three times - I think I know the correct pronunciation!
  • Irregardless and mute point turn me into the grammatical hulk. I also second the frustration over "could care less" and sentences with random punctuation that don't have anything to do with correct usage.
  • I have at least 10 people on my facebook who mix up "our" and "are"!

    "It's are 2nd anniversary"

    Um..what?
  • "First annual" irritates me. An event doesn't become "annual" until the second time it happens.

  • I don't like the misuse of anniversary for celebrating months.  "Celebrating our 1 month anniversary!"  No.  The root 'ani' actally means 'yearly', so there is no such thing as a monthly anniversary.  Just say 'Celebrating being married for 1 month!' instead.

I'm guilty of this.  And I'm usually a stickler about grammar, but I guess there's a few words/phrases that are technically wrong, but I "could care less" about ;)

I hate "Deja vu all over again".  Isn't that redundant?

    YES!

I think that every website should have programming built in so that people can't hit the submit/send button on their post/email unless the grammar, punctuation, spelling and capitalization is correct.  It could allow one mistake per paragraph but no more!  At the very least, it should not allow people to post a "wall of text" or a post with less than one capitalization and one period per every 15 to 20 words.

Does anyone want to join me in running for public office on a "pro-proper English" platform?

I would, but I'm a journalist. So I have my own role to play in the "pro-proper English" movement. :)

I went to a wedding two weeks ago where it listed in the program who the "maid of honors" were.

@1covejack - not sure if you meant to respond, you just quoted a big ol' block of text?

  • I hate the word hysterical. It's ridiculously offensive to me. For those of you who don't know, the root of the word, hyster = uterus. So it both implies that hysteria is limited to women and that we get hysterical as a result of our female-ness.

Really!  Me too!  *high five*  (Technically, I'm a student but I'm almost done, am interning right now and will be freelancing for the paper I'm interning with after the internship is done so I call myself a journalist.)
  • Ah but technically in Scotland "Aisle" is spoken " Isle" because of the accent in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Highlands. However if you go to the lowlands ( near the border) its spoken " Aisle" without the accent, because they are closer to England. However I do agree with you people there. And have another for you. I hate it when people take other 's traditions ( if they aren't part of their Fiancé traditions) and adding them to their own. It especially bothers me if they are clan traditions from Scotland or Ireland , as those are supposed to be private. Anyways, I think if the person is not marrying into the clan or has no knowledge of the traditions ( ie. hand fasting) they shouldn't be doing it at all! What do you guys think?
  • I'm sorry but I am probably very much guilty of spelling isle instead of aisle. I am so incredibly terrible at grammar and spelling, It was always the bane of my existence in my schooling! As a nurse I can spell  pelvicaliectasis without a problem but can't spell where/were, lose/loose, or really anything! Believe it or not, I actually went to a grade school that taught "creative spelling"...yes really. Its messed me up ever since!

I have had such a problem with Fiance! I told my FI as soon as he proposed that I would eventually call him my finances....and I finally did the other day....At the end of an email I said "i Love you my finance.....oooppps :) He loves me anyways

What's with the resurrection @natswild?  This thread hadn't been touched since early July...
  • I personally cant stand when people say irregardless. The fact that is has been added to some dictionaries defined as "informal regardless" makes matters even worse.
  • I can't stand when people dig up old threads just to say something random.
