Jeweler issues

So my fianc got my engagement ring online from a legit company and everything. The ring turned out a little big, so I took it to Chateau at Pittsburgh Mills to get it resized. I took it there because its pretty close to me and they do their work in house. Got my ring resized and it fit perfectly went down 3/4 of a size. However, 2 weeks later I noticed my stone was extremely loose. I took it back and they said they would fix it. I ended up having to leave it overnight, but when I picked it up it seemed much better. THEN about 3 weeks later I noticed my stone was loose again! I had my fianc take my ring back because I had to work, but apparently the jewler said there is nothing he can do. He said my setting makes it difficult to tighten because it is a tension setting. Now I am very upset there was no problem with my ring until I had it resized! And when they fixed it the first time he never indicated that there would possibly be a problem.

I'm going to take it somewhere else to get a second opinion and contact the company who made my ring but my future inlaws suggested I take it back to Chateau and tell them I will see about having someone else fix it and that I want them to pay the bill, and if they refuse that I will take them to the magistrate.

I was just wondering if anyone has any similar experiences or advice for this situation. Thank you very much!

Re: Jeweler issues

  • I would be hesitant to take it back to Chateau if they have already tried to fix it twice with no success. I don't know if legally, you have much of a leg to stand on because there is some risk inherent in having someone other than the jewelry maker doing repairs. You will probably end up spending more time/money in small claims court than the repairs will cost.

I would suggest looking into S. Kaufman Jewelers on East Ohio Street in the Northside, Henne Jewelers in Shadyside, or Orr's in Squirrel Hill for repairs. S. Kaufman has a fantastic reputation for repairs and custom work (I've never used them, but several people I know have). If you go to Orr's, I would recommend speaking to Duane, as he handles most of their in-house work. He is phenomenal and we have had nothing but postive experiences working with the staff there. Good luck, and I hope you get your ring fixed soon!!
  • Is it the kind of ring where it's just held like with no prongs? Just between the metal? I always thought those couldnt be resized because I read that one time and told my FI that so he would know. :(

I know if you have little stones too like pave on the side those fall out with a lot of resizing. Do you have jewlery insurance that could cover this?
  • Thank you both for your input. We ended up calling the company he got it from and they said they should be able to fix it for free. I am a little nervous about mailing it across the country, but that's what insurance is for, right? :)

Here is a link to a picture of my ring (I hope it works!)

emilyb213 - I am hesitant to take it back to Chateau. Thank you very much for the jewler suggestions! I will definitely use them in the future.

ash241 - It does have a little bit of a base underneath, but there are no prongs on it and it is pretty much held together from like the band on the side. I did some research and I think they can be resized, but it is trickier and most jewlers do not do it. I was frustrated because after realizing what kind of setting I had, the guy from Chateau should have known if he would do it properly. I do have my ring covered under insurance also :)
