Song To Walk Out To??

I'm getting married in September, and we'll be getting married in a church so the song has to be church appropriate. The Pastor thinks "Vow-y" songs would be acceptable, i.e. NSYNC "This I Promise You" or "I Swear" etc. I don't want the usual Bridal March (the church doesn't allow that song anyway), and I want something original/unique. Any ideas for songs would be most appreciated!!

What about "Ode to Joy"?

The type of song that's appropriate will depend greatly on what religion your church is...

I'm confused how you could have Nsync, but not the Bridal March...?

Its my fiance's church, and he's Lutheran. I know, I was surprised too. Apparantly the opera that the Bridal March orginated from had a lot of lewd inuendo's in it, thus making it inappropriate. I honestly think its a little ridiculous myself, especially when hardy any one will actually know the origins of the bridal march.

I'd probably just pick a song from the hymnal. You can ask the pastor or music director for suggestions.

Does the church have a list of approved songs?  I'd ask the pastor, an elder, or someone there in the know if there is such a list, and then make a selection from it.  If not, I'd ask said person for guidelines about appropriate music.

Yeah, sounds like you've got an old school LCMS pastor. They didn't like Wagner because of pagan themes and a traditional belief against pagentry that was central to Lutheranism. That's not a synod-wide belief though and isn't enforced by the synod.

Yep. you hit it right on the nail. Old school is definiately a term I would use, and yea a lot of it comes down to paganism, etc.

Yeah, haha you and I have a lot in common. FI's pastor is the same.

Not sure if it's your style, but I recently saw a recessional to "Happy Together" by the Turtles. I thought it was cute.

Yes, I'm aware of the difference between Wagner's "Here comes the bride" and Mendelssohn. You aren't the only classically trained musician here.

I am also aware that Lohengrin (not Lohengren) itself doesn't draw heavily from pagan themes. However, Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen cycle does. And yes, he was horribly anti-Semitic. And if Shakespeare had been a composer, I'm sure Lutherans would have objected to his music at weddings as well. Like I said, it's an old LCMS rule.

While "Water Music" is a lovely suite, it is also played very frequently weddings (we got as many requests for Handel as we did for Pachelbel's Canon in D). So it is not very original or unique, nor does it fit her pastor's suggestion of a vow-y song.

I too, was not allowed to use Wagner's Bridal March, as the scene where that's from depicts the bride's descent into Hell, according to our priest.  I'm not surprised.

We're using Pachebel Canon for the whole processional, including my entrance.  Other options are "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire" or Schubert's "Ave Maria".  Those are both very common processional choices and are acceptable for a church wedding.

Yea it's a slippery slope, I never realized I would have to compromise my wedding music! But it makes a lot of sense now that I reflect on it why most church weddings I've been to have mostly just orchestral music playing through the whole thing.

And yea @CMGr I think PDKH & wittykity14 are correct as far as why the church is not allowing the Bridal March to be played. The scene that the music is played at and the meaning behind the music is mostly why this Lutheran church doesn't allow it.

BM's, mothers, etc are walking out to IZ's Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Thats a good idea, I didn't consider that song IZ's Somewhere Over The Rainbow, that would be a really nice song for the BM to walk out to. Thanks for the idea!

You are SO RIGHT!! that is a GORGEOUS rendition of Christina Perri's "1000 Years" I've flirted with the idea of this song but wasnt sure if the lyrics would be approved of, but wow this instrumenal version with the piano and cello is simply amazing. Thank you very much for this, I really appreciate it!
