is this enough? (wedding is 16hrs long)

We don't have an end time for our reception. Based on other weddings we have been to I think 5-6ish everyone with others leaving around 3.
We've got booze and soft drinks sorted.
But I'm conscious of having enough food and things for the entire night (ceremony starts at 2pm)

After the wedding breakfast:  We will have a night buffet (say around 7/8ish) and we thought about having chips or something later as well (around 10ish maybe)
We thought about having an ice cream stand (with bits) going all night, along with a Coffee/tea and cold drinks. The cake will be eaten as well, we also thought about keeping the bar snacks filled as well (crisps, Bombay mix, nuts) along with the 'party food'
FI suggested that we also have some toasters and bread out for the night/morning.

The question is though would you feel that all that is enough food?

Re: is this enough? (wedding is 16hrs long)

  • I'm also very confused. Who are you feeding when? How many guests are we talking.

I honestly couldn't understand the question. I just couldn't get past how ridiculously long your wedding/reception be. Is this a cultural thing or a normal old wedding reception. Is there a gap? What's up with the wedding breakfast? So confused.
It's cultural (for me) FI's cultural go on long but not till sunrise like me (more 2 ish). So cultural really.
    No gap
A wedding breakfast is the name of the dinner it is just what it is called (first meal as a married couple and all)

Question - does it sound like it is enough food

All the guests. That food is from after the breakfast till the 'end'
    About 270 people all in.

Sorry if I'm not making much sense.
  • You didn't say how much food is being served at all. You just listed random snacks - which is totally not enough. What's in your buffet?

So people are staying from like 7pm to 7am? You need to be serving AT LEAST two full meals.

Can I ask what culture we are referring to here?

  • The breakfast is around 4/4.30pm
    Buffet around 7/8
    Chips around 10ish

Buffet will be things like (meeting the chef and things this week) chicken, kebabs, Roasted veg, dips, bread. (It will be hot)

Then just lots and lots of snacks (mentioned in OP throughout the night)

We could push the chips back a bit and add pizzas or something.

-FI is Irish. In his family weddings go till 2ish with lots of booze.
Both me and my 'father' (not blood) are Jamaican (though different ethnicity) and for both of us (in our families) weddings often go till sunrise.

What are you serving for the "breakfast"?

well haven't confirmed with the chef yet. But will be three courses. Will include curried goat in some way (we think, we might make it part of the buffet but then it is harder to eat) but either way there will be a veggie option (maybe a leek crustade) and a fish option, as well as meat option. (All with a carb and veg obviously) don't know what for the starters thought about having it placed on a lazy Susan on the tables so a bit more antipasto like (?) Meats, bread, pâté, salad, laverbread, picked. But not sure if we need to do a proper dessert because of the ice cream stand that will be running but might do an option of a posset or something (ice cream stand will have things like meringue, fruit, brownies as well as normal ice cream toppings.
(Kids mains will either be small servings of adults or the plainer equivalent - they will get to chose)

FI suggested that we have a cheese course as well which I think is a great idea but not sure if we would have it at the end of the meal or with the buffet

None of it is firmed up yet but basically it is 3 (sort of served) courses

  • It sounds like you will have enough food to me.  And everything sounds delicious!

Sounds like enough food. Weird to have "breakfast" in the afternoon and then a buffet just a few hours later. And I would be prepared that not a lot of people will stay as long as you seem to want. That's just crazy long. I mean what do guests do for that long?
drink, dance, talk, play games, talk, sing. Family things.
Trust me - I know what our families are like they'll be there
Why are you serving breakfast at 4:30 pm?
    Buffet sounds good.
If people are drinking until 2am, there needs to be food. Chips, pretzels, maybe little sandwiches?
I explained above the wedding breakfast is the just the name given to the dinner served at the reception. It is just called a breakfast because of first meal as a married couple.
Hmm sandwiches never thought of that. Thanks

Thanks. I'm so paranoid that there won't be enough
  • I would have a savory snack for the real late night-pizza, sliders, tacos, something like that. I love ice cream but I wouldn't keep that going all night. I would want it after dinner, not when I'm liquored up at 2 am.
  • it sounds fun!! which culture is this? i'm thinking caribbean or indian due to the curried goat?

  • Since I'm marrying in England, I'm having a "wedding breakfast" too, which is the first meal you have together as husband and wife (it is served at dinner time and is comprised of dinner food.)

That said, I don't know why breakfast would be served at 4:30am.   I can't imagine who would still be there at that time because the wedding starts at 2pm.  That's just a crazy long wedding.

  • You definitely have enough food, I just wonder about the timings.

If I'm eating a 3 course meal at 4-5pm, I'm not going to be ready to hit the buffet at 7pm. I would do this more like 8-9pm.

For the late night snack I would prefer to have something that you can leave out/nibble on, like sandwiches, fruit & veggie trays etc, versus chips & pizza that need to be kept hot. And I would probably want it around 11pm-midnight, or even a bit later.

  • I think all of those suggestions will be just enough. People don't really want meals, that's why the little bar snacks and drinks is a perfect idea.

I agree. I think a 3-course meal at 4-5 would keep me fine until 8-9pm at least. And by then I'd be a little tipsy, and be thrilled to binge eat a buffet. And then I'd probably drink more, and if someone put pizza or sandwiches in front of my face at midnight, I'd probably eat that as well.

If you do 3 main meals--4pm seated dinner, 8pm buffet, and 12am pizza/sandwiches, I think that would be great. That's 4 hours between them. However, if the dinner is really 3 courses and people won't be done until after 5, I'd push the buffet even later until 9pm, and do pizza/sandwiches after midnight. You can always have a variety of snacks--like chips, pretzels, etc. come out before the pizza/sandwiches, and stay out after, too.

I agree 100%. Especially about the snacks and midnight pizza. I'm always hungry after a night of dancing (especially when there are cocktails involved). The timing sounds right in MandyMost post.

P.S. Your wedding sounds like so much fun. A little exhausting, but still fun (and very memorable for the guests).

    People don't really want meals?

  • @JaneAustensGhost she said PM not AM
I would push the Buffet a little later as well but the amount of food sounds fine.

Being Irish I totally get it - weddings here can go on till 6am - the bar will serve as long as there's someone drinking. Sounds good on the food but I'd do the buffet a little later and maybe do something at midnight or so rather than 10pm. And I love the idea of there being something available for those that stay really late (or early!!)

ETA oh and I'd probably do something when people arrive to the venue after the ceremony. At mine we will have canapés on arrival (about 3pm), dinner 5.30/6, cake, tea and coffee about 10 and the 'finger food about 11.30/12.
