Couples or Sandals?

We are having such a hard time deciding on whether to go to St. Lucia Sandals or Couples San Souci or Swept Away. Has anyone been to either of these places? Or know someone who has? Pros and cons please?

Re: Couples or Sandals?

  • I've been to Couples Sans Souci and Tower Isle. Personally, I'd choose Couples from a resort perspective, but I'd choose St.Lucia from an island perspective. LOL I do think Couples Swept Away is a good middle ground, as it's the nicest Couples and is on a nice stretch of beach. Couples Sans Souci is the smallest of the Couples and is very quiet and laid back. I think you'll find a better overall value at Couples, but if you want something a bit more fancy (like a plunge pool or butler service) you can only have that at Sandals. For what they charge for it, though, IMHO it's not worth it.

  • We are going to Sandals in Negril Jamaica for our upcoming honeymoon in January, 2014.  We are SO excited.  We splurged and are doing the "swim-up" suite w/a 24 hour butler.  I am counting the days :-)

  • We did Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau (it was the closest) and we loved it.
  • I have no helpful input other than we just booked Sandals St. Lucia for September and are SOOO EXCITED!
We chose it because I love to hike and it has some great hiking [apparently] for an island. :)
  • We've never been to Couples but we have been Sandals several times. We been to the Grande in St. Lucia twice as well as the one one Negril Jamaica and the one in Antigua. Reviews and pics are in the link above my siggy pic. We are already booked for Sandals Whitehouse in Jamaica for next year.
  • We've been to Sandals Montego Bay and Couples Negril.  I greatly preferred Montego Bay.  I thought Sandals had way better water sports and activities- the snorkel boat went out every 2 hours like clockwork and as long as there was room you could go.  Couples we had to sign up the day before and if all the spots were full for the 2 trips they had planned they still wouldn't have the 3rd that day because "there isn't enough interest".  Sandals had a smaller beach but we never had trouble, Couples had someone come by and take drink orders though which was a nice perk Sandals didn't have.

Our room was much nicer at Sandals even though they were pretty equivalent categories- Sandals had soft rugs not the outside floor mat type, and the bathroom vanity was outside the shower/toilet room so I could do makeup while FI showered (it was all one room at couples, and the bathroom door was slotted so if someone stank it up it crept into the room even with the bathroom door closed).

We didn't get a butler or swim up stuff, but did spring for a concierge room with a water view at Sandals (and I can honestly say even with all drinks included having a bar in the room was well worth it), I would make sure to keep your building close to the water at that location b/c I know airport noise is an issue for some of the rooms close to it.  Couples does include the in-room bar with every room so we upgraded to ocean view, and Negril's beach was way bigger.  Both had pretty good restaurants and food, and drinks were tasty at both as well.
  • I just booked our honeymoon at Couples Swept Away. We were torn between CSA or Sandals Negril. I'm not a fan of the class system, however, so the concierge system at Sandals was a huge turn off for me. I also loved how the rooms at CSA seemed more Caribbean. We opted for an atrium suite that comes with a huge verandah and our own hammock. From what I've heard, the food at CSA is better, too. I'm counting down the days!

  • We actually just booked our honeymoon yesterday to go to Sandals La Toc in St. Lucia! We decided to go with Sandals because there are so many great options. We loved the fact that we could stay at one place but go to all three to eat, use the land/water sports, etc. We learned that Halcyon is in the middle of the three resorts and it's about a 20 minute ride to both the Grande and La Toc from Halcyon. Don't know if you were aware of this, but it's good to know. We chose to stay it the Pitons room with private sundeck. It's the blue buildings, upper floor. It's not a butler room though so not sure what you are looking for (the lower floor is a butler room though, just no big sundeck). I've talked to numerous people who have stayed in St. Lucia and also at Sandals (La Toc) and they loved it! Good luck in deciding!
