HELP! How to sit in dress

Hi, my wedding dress is a tight fitting mermaid style. It fits perfectly but I'm having a hard time sitting in it because of the style. Can anyone give me tips on how to sit comfortably? Thanks.

Re: HELP! How to sit in dress

  • You might just have to practice. And you'll probably have to sit very upright (no slouching), so you can practice this day to day without the dress on too. I'm not sure what else to suggest; my dress wasn't this style so I can't exactly relate.
  • You might need to hike the skirt up a little bit to create "slack" for your knees to bend. My wedding dress wasn't that style, but I've worn other dresses like that and it always helped.
  • Mine is the same way, and instead of sitting straight down, I kind of slide in on one hip and that seemed to help.

Exactly! And once you're seated, sit straight up -- do not slouch.  Just practice a few times once you put your dress on to see what is most comfortable for you.

I had a very tight fitting mermaid style dress.  During each of my alterations appointments the seamstress had me sit down to be sure she didn't have to let it out at the hip.

  • Also, you'll only sit on the edge of the chair. Your back will not touch the back of the chair. I think the key is to sit slowly, being mindful of your posture and hitching up the dress to give some room in the hips/knees (as others have said).
  • Thanks everyone! So glad I got some responses...will try all of this.

Ohhhh yes, forgot that one.  I would've never been able to sit all the way back.

  • Since the discussion is already going (and I don't want to take it over but you ladies have some very helpful tips), how do you sit in a dress that is bustled without sitting on or squishing the bustles?  I've got a simple 3-point under-bustle which is lower down but I'm worried it'll hit the edge of the chair and look flat or scrunched the rest of the evening.

The bustle is done below the tush, so when you sit, you don't sit directly on it.  Even if you did, wedding dress fabric is a lot more durable than you think.  it wouldn't hurt a thing.
