We're 'concerned for social circles' now? Quit trolling, lady.

Also: Fish have nerves. They really do. So if people are swallowing them whole, they are suffering in your stomach acid until they die. If they are subjected to music vibrations until their heart stops, I'd consider that cruelty, not sushi.

  • Yeah, I know someone who was in charge of getting fish for a church game night thing. She didn't know you can't just put them in tap water. She bought them the day before the event, had everything all set up, and they were all dead in the morning b/c she didn't treat the water.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Sushi is dead when you eat it. Goldfish in center pieces (in theory) would still be alive when eating them. How are the 2 "the same thing"?

*I felt sorry for my husband before I met him. Take a number.*

  • Ramona, if the fish still gets eaten, what's the difference? In the end the fish still dies. I'm done though, I clearly do not think the same as most of you. Sorry for asking.

By this logic, would it be cool for me to serve pulled pork and have piglets as my centerpieces? Because that would be adorable.

OP, so you're going to spend your wedding dropping fish flakes into your centerpieces instead of dancing or thanking your guests for attending?

Also, my sashimi always shows up alive and with a bludgeon so I can choose whether to kill it myself before eating. Doesn't yours?
  • I think we should just turn this into a dance party.

Learn a little bit about commercial fishing AND about having pet fish and come back and say "what's the difference"

Because as someone who is marrying a FISHERMAN, I can tell you that a whole lot more goes into "fishing" than reaching into a bowl on a table and eating a domestic fish that is being used as a decoration. (Not only from the aspect of the equipment, skills, etc. but also from a regulation standpoint not to mention health & safety standpoint)

And as someone who has had aquariums...a LOT more goes into caring for pet fish than just sticking them in some random bowl of water on a table.

Only if you're going to use the piglets in the centerpieces as your pulled pork ;-)
    So tender...

I was more talking about the "let's change the topic of this thread that people are still posting on to something I would prefer" (not a direct quote- paraphrasing what you said) instead of you know, just starting a thread if you wanted a dance party.  I hate that shit.
    *You're right. Sorry.

  • Actually I'm NOT a vegetarian. And for all the girls on here that complain about generalizing statements, way to bust out "this is why so many people hate vegetarians"

I eat meat. but I also don't get all up in arms when animals are used in other ways. It's okay to kill them for resources, and it's okay to kill them for meat, but anything else is cruelty? Sushi is raw fish. If some dude wants to eat the fish, he's still eating it which is the same as a fully cooked salmon in my opinion. I guess I just don't get it.
If you think distressing and killing animals for funsies is A ok- then I can't help you because I am not a licensed therapist with anti psychosis drugs available to give out. ETA: changing my answer because I saw your troll buddy/alt one thread up. Shoo troll.
What the hell are you talking about, Pele?
    I second this request.  HUH?
  • Wow. I guess some people think animals are only capable of two things: living and dying. And even then, there's not much of a difference between those two things.

  • And.... I got flagged on this post that was unwarranted.   @PDKH got flagged also.

More to add to your evergrowing list @knotporscha

LOL I didn't even notice the flag. Yep, chalk this up as yet another flagging system failure. Yay for no accountability!

  • @harry87   nope, no notification. I just clicked on my "wall" and it shows me the number of times I've been flagged for abuse. if you click on that number, it will tell you which posts got flagged.

Nope - how it works is one day you just go to be a personal AW and admire your own love-its, and you notice these lovely little flags sitting on your account. I don't think you can even review what posts earned you the flags like you can with love-its.

ETA: I am personally very proud of my spam flags though - they show how silly the system is.

ETA again: fun fact - you can review abuse flags, but not spam flags.

  • Just popping in really quick to say.. I have only seen fish as centerpieces once in person and the majority of them were dead by the time the party was over. My bf actually did try to save a few during the party, but alas, it did little good. Nothing says "let's party" like seeing fish floating belly up while you're eating dinner!

I think I need to use puppies as an example. Puppies always work.

It is okay to have a puppy as a pet.

It is not okay to get a bunch of puppies from the Humane Society, and put them in cages with no food or proper care as centerpieces for your wedding and hope guests treat them nicely and/or take them home afterwards.

I feel like this is a bad example because people would actually take the puppies home. Like me I'd take every single one of those puppies home! I kind of almost want someone to have puppies at their wedding now. Puppies can be the new fish, but treated properly.

I'd take all the puppies home too.

What about cats? They make good centerpieces. You could put them beside the fish for extra amusement.

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.
