Small reception: cake and champagne only

Hello!! So we are having our small reception in a ballroom at a hotel. We are only planning on cake and champagne right now. It will only be close family and two friends. Is it weird if we don't have dancing? We won't be having a dj or a dance floor bit I'm sure my brother could rig something up to his iPod.... What would you do?

    Hi Jilly,
    Cake and champagne receptions are totally fine if it is not at a meal time (ie ceremony starts at 2:30/3 and reception ends at 5 or the ceremony starts after 9pm).  If it is at a meal time, you need to serve a full meal or enough food to constitute a meal. This needn't be expensive.

    Generally, non-meal receptions are shorter so there is no need for music and dancing unless you want it. I would not find a non-dancing wedding strange at all.

    You definitely need music. We didn't have dancing, either, but we had music. I have been to a wedding reception before that had no music, and it was just kind of awkward with nothing but a quiet hum of idle chitchat. 


    What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

    I agree with PPs that background music (it can be from an iPod) would be best.  As long as your wedding isn't at a meal time, cake and champagne with some light background music is just fine.

    A Practical Wedding puts up a lot of playlists. You can look through there for ideas and build your own playlist with an iPod.

    Hi, let me just quickly clarify- I meant a DJ to play music for dancing isn't necessary unless you really want it. But yes, background music just on an ipod would be nice as it adds to the party atmosphere.

    Ok thanks!! I will look into some background tunes :) fortunately the ballroom is a 5 min walk through the hotel!!!

    I would also consider adding some finger foods/appetizers.  Even if it's a non meal time, it's nice to have something more than just cake.  I think if it's just cake & champagne, your reception will likely be over in about 30-45 minutes.

    We are planning to go to dinner after cake and champagne haven't decided how to approach it but since its just close family it should be easy :)
