Drinks

We were playing around with various "drink calculators" to see how much beer and wine to buy. Most of the ones we saw call for 60% wine, 40% beer. In your circle of family and friends, do you find this to be true? With the huge Portland area microbrew selection, we didn't know if regions varied.
Also, we can have a huge amount of variety or just a few choices, what would you want to drink?
Here's another one, We want to keep the whole thing simple. ice water, hot water for coffee and tea are for sure. Punch? Lemonade? Iced tea? All?
It it makes a difference, we'll be having around 125 adults and 40 kids, outside at a park on a Friday evening.
Thanks, I know this board doesn't get a lot of traffic but I wanted a Portland point of view.

Re: Drinks

  • I'm running into this same issue! Right now we're planning on 50/50 beer and wine, specifically because of the whole Portland microbrew scene. Most of FIs family purportedly won't come near wine, most of my family will only drink wine, our friends lean toward beer, weddings seem to indicate wine..... it should even out.

Personally I LOVE it when brides/grooms select beverages that have meaning to them, e.g. wine on their first date, etc. I'm leaning toward a keg of Deschutes or some local, crowd-pleasing beer and then let guests order by the bottle through the venue's bar. As for wine, here's the typical balance I'm seeing: champagne, pinot noir (you HAVE to in Portland!), cabernet, and a Riesling or pinot grigio. Four choices is typically enough to please everyone, especially if you take into account your menu, dessert, guest preferences, etc. If you can supply your own wine, I'd talk to the wine folks at Trader Joe's. I've also found some amazing blog posts and articles talking about wine selection for weddings, let me know if you want me to send them to you :)

Ice water, tea, coffee, tea, and lemonade OR punch is exactly what we're having! You probably don't need both, and they seem interchangeable enough that you can almost decide based on decor: Do country-style lemonade dispensers go better with your theme, or would a bright punch match your colors? Both would be delightful to sip on on a warm evening!
  • I knew if I waited long enough I'd have a Portland answer!
Non alcohol drinks -check, we're going with lemonade because I like to mix it with my iced tea. I'll head to Trader Joe's with your wine ideas. I was hoping someone would say that 2 buck chuck actually tasted good but we'll go with something a little more expensive and see if we can return or give away unused bottles -we aren't wine drinkers. I wish we could go with a keg but we're at Columbia Park and it's cans/bottles only. Our friends drink Pabst before payday and micro brews after. His family is Bud light, my family will drink anything
I've heard Maletis does dock sales, have you checked them out?
  • Don't worry, we Portland brides are out there!!
Personally for red wine I would highly recommend the blends. Apothic and Menage a Trois are both really enjoyable AND available at Costco. I haven't heard of Maletis, I'll check them out!!
