Dollar store river rocks for guest book?

I'm having a hard time finding reasonably priced river rocks for a wishing stone style "guest book." I was just wondering if anyone has actually used the dollar store ones for this. The reviews for the rocks are great, but most mention using them as decoration or vase fillers, not for actually writing on. I'm just trying to figure out the size/smoothness before I order online and if they'd be suitable for writing on. Thanks!

Re: Dollar store river rocks for guest book?

  • Hey, that's what I did!  I bought mine from Hobby Lobby, though, b/c bag size/price wise, they ended up being cheaper. I have physically seen the Dollar Tree ones, though, and they are just fine for writing on. Just keep in mind that you have to buy A LOT of bags b/c not every stone is big/smooth/flat enough for writing on, so it's not like you buy a bag of 30 rocks and actually get 30 rocks out of it, you know?

That's what I figured, but we're having a small wedding (50-60 ppl), so it's still a steal, even if we only get a few out of each bag. My fiancé thinks the whole thing is stupid so it's especially important that I spend as little as possible, lol. I'll check hobby lobby too (as long as I can order online...we don't have one here). Thanks for the input!

http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/mixed-river-stones-580316/ Is this what you used? They say 1-2 inches and the reviews of the dollar tree ones say 1.5-3. Since you've seen both in person, can you tell me if that's accurate or are they pretty comparable in size? Also, do you remember about how many usable ones came out of the 3 lb bag? Thanks again!
  • Yes, that is what I used. I would say they are pretty comparable in size, but I can't say for certain, only just eyballing them, you know?  I would say about 1/4 of them from each bag were usable. Our wedding was small, too. I think I bought about 10 bags. It worked out for us, though, b/c we did river rocks for a lot of stuff, and the extras that we didn't use for the guest book went as filler for the trays we put our favors on.
