Re-Wear Mother of the Bride Dress

My daughter was married last August and I bought a beautiful MOB dress and spent a lot of money.  My niece who I am very close with is getting married this October. I was wondering if it would be proper to have the dress cut down and wear it again to my niece's wedding? It is black lace with some beading. It was the perfect style for my shape and I got tons of compliments on it.

Re: Re-Wear Mother of the Bride Dress

  • Wear whatever you want!

I just got married a couple of weeks ago and my Mom wore the same dress to my wedding that she wore to my sister's wedding 2 years ago. No one noticed, no one cared. She got a ton of compliments. If she can pull it off as the MOB in both cases, you can for sure pull it off.

  • Nothing wrong with it at all!

My mom got a beautiful floor-length dress to wear for my wedding. She then lent it to a friend's sister who had 3 of her children get married this summer (that's a lot of MOB/MOG dresses to buy...). She's now getting it altered to turn it into a knee-length cocktail dress that she can wear on special occasions. I think this is awesome! Wish I could do the same with my wedding dress :-)

  • Wear away! It sounds like a lovely dress.
  • I think it's perfectly acceptable!  One of my bridesmaids is actually wearing her MOB dress from her son's wedding to my wedding.  It's the exact same dress she would have worn as one of my bridesmaids anyways.... why buy another dress.
  • Absolutely go for it! Unless you're the bride or a bridesmaid, there's nothing wrong with re-wearing a dress you already own to a wedding.

My mother bought a GORGEOUS MOG dress for my brother's wedding last summer. I thought she should have re-worn it for my wedding, but she didn't want to (same basic role, MOG/MOB, same set of family invited, plus their wedding was informal, outside, in August and mine is formal, inside, in October), so she just bought another one today.

  • There are even some bridesmaids dresses that could be re-worn to other weddings. Just wanted to put that out there.
  • @KeptInStitches -- True. I meant you shouldn't wear a BM dress from one wedding if you're the BM in another wedding without clearing it with the bride first. Should have clarified that! :)

  • Gah! What is it with me and reading comprehension today? Thanks.
  • No prob! I can see how it can have been read both ways. And you're right -- I have re-worn a BM dress to a wedding as a guest and gotten LOTS of compliments on it.
