Bakery vs. Grocery Store - CAKES!

Hi SD Brides!

Where did or are you getting your cake from?  Did you pick a fancy bakery or a grocery store?  I am hoping not to spend over $500 for a cake to feed 75-100 people.  Looking for a fairly simple cake(s) with buttercream roses for the frosting - could be stacked or be in separate cakes that I would display on different height cake stands.

Just curious if anyone had any stellar (or not so stellar) experience with any local businesses?  The amount of options is overwhelming and I'd love some directions to start moving in.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Bakery vs. Grocery Store - CAKES!

  • are you set on a cake?  we haven't picked our bakery yet but we plan to do cupcakes with a smaller cake for us to cut into.  Another option is to have a bakery make a cake for you and your fiance to cut into and then serve sheet cake to your guest, they wont know the difference if you have the staff pull it into the back(costco's sheet cakes always seem to be a crowd pleaser) hth!!!
  • We are using The Rose Flour Factory for our cake-she's incredibly affordable and has really, really awesome flavor combinations. My fiance almost fell out of his chair when he tried the chocolate cake with chocolate and strawberry mousse-and he doesn't even really like cake. lol

She also includes a free 6" top tier for all cakes :)
  • We're using Davine Catering in Vista. The cake is included with our venue package. But I went to my tasting last week and holy shit, the cake was good. We're getting red velvet with cream cheese frosting and chocolate marble with chocolate mouse filling. Yes.
