changing reception venues

So i screwed up, I booked a reception venue which max's out at 120, we invited 200.  Half of the 200 are an 9hr flight away, my mother inlaw and fiance assured me most of those people wouldn't be coming.  Well holy f*%$ most people are coming.  wedding is july 2014, i sent out STD'S for the people who have the 9 hr flights. so any way, i am looking into a venue right beside my original venue (literally a 30 sec walk), i am still going to have the ceremony at my first venue because it is on a rooftop with an incredible view.  Is it super tacky to be changing the reception venue after the STD'S went out?  FYI i realize i sent the STD's early, but my family wanted to book on aeroplan asap, which they have already done.

I can't imagine how this would be a problem for your guests.
  • It's not a big deal, just make sure that the invitations that go out 6-8 weeks before the wedding have the correct venues.  Your guests travel plans aren't affected by the small switch in reception venue.  Most people just put a town on save the dates, not specific venues, anyway.
  • Yeah just change the venue it's fine.
  • Usually STDs only list the city, so if it's a 30 second walk, this shouldn't be a big deal. If you listed the venue, just make sure your invitations are crystal clear about the location.

I'm confused how you could have the ceremony at the first venue if it doesn't fit enough people?

  • I wouldn't worry about it. They have to go to the first venue for the ceremony, so your STD wasn't really incorrect. Just make sure the invite is correct.

A venue with just chairs fits a lot more people than a venue with tables for a seated dinner...
