Each tier of wedding cake a different flavor.

We are having a three tier cake for our 100 guests. We decided to do each tier a different flavor. Anyone else in favor of this idea? What did you decide to serve?

Re: Each tier of wedding cake a different flavor.

  • That sounds like a good idea so people have some options.  They do get the choice, right?  I think some crowd pleasers like chocolate or vanilla flavors are a good idea and maybe have the third tier as something different.

  • Our bakery let us choose two different flavors for our cake, to give our guests the option of having one or the other (or both). We choose their most popular wedding cake flavor (pink champagne cake with raspberry coulis and white chocolate mouse) as well as our favorite from the tasting that we did (dark chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, and raspberry coulis). We knew that having the raspberry on both was a little repetitive, but we tried switching strawberry or another flavor in and it just didn't taste as delicious.

I think if you're going to have 3 flavors, one should be a chocolate cake, one something standard like a vanilla or classic white cake, and then the third should be fun and funky - maybe that includes on of your or your FI's favorite ingredients (I did this with the groom's cake I got for DH as a surprise - made to taste like samoa girl scout cookies).

  • We decided to do a white cake on the bottom tier with custard and raspberry filling (three layers of filling, two custard and one raspberry), second tier is a red velvet cake with cream cheese filling, and top tier is a chocolate cake with fudge filling. We will be serving all three tiers since our bakery can duplicate our top tier for our one year anniversary for only $16.99!

doeydo yes they will get to choose their own which is nice since everyone has different tastes.

allispain Zomg! My mouth is watering at the description of your cake. I have no idea what pink champagne cake is but I want some STAT! What is with the groom's cake? I have never been to a wedding where they had one.

scribe95 good advice. We definitely tried to do normal with creative. The problem for me is that my FH doesn't like cake so he was no help. He does love cheesecake! Maybe this could be the groom's cake @allispain was referring to?

  • A groom's cake is, apparently, a tradition in the southern US. I just thought it would be fun, so I had one made for our RD. Usually, the idea is to have something that represents the groom's interests, since usually the bride is the one who's more interested in the wedding planning and ends up making a lot of decisions because the groom says "I don't really care what the flowers look like" and that sort of thing.

For example, the groom's cake I got for DH was made to look like one of his electric basses (he's a professional musician). It was a way to make him feel special at the RD, and everyone loved it! I think there were more pictures posted to facebook of that cake than there were of our first dance. No joke. :-)

  • The only problem we had with this idea was that we really liked both flavors and were going to do two tiers of one and two tiers of another, then realized that most of our immediate family would want both and that would possibly mean not enough cake for everyone. We did just one and took the guess work out of it
  • @scribe95: How annoying! The whole point of having multiple flavors is to give your guests options...

We had our catering staff put the cake on the display where the buffet had been. Once the cake had been sliced and placed there, our DJ announced it to everyone, so that the knew where to find it. That way, those people who don't like cake didn't have to sit there and pick at a piece on their plate, those that love cake could grab multiple slices, and we didn't have to take a break from dancing and socializing to make it all happen.

  • We did that for my first wedding.  The guests liked the variety and having a choice.

This time we're doing the entire cake in vanilla bean and decorating it with mixed berries instead of flowers.  We are also serving a chocolate bourbon mousse in edible dark chocolate cups so every one will have plenty of variety when it comes time for dessert.
  • We're having five tiers with different flavors: red velvet, chocolate nutella, vanilla bean with salted caramel, vanilla bean with vanilla bean buttercream, and lemon with lemon curd.  We also have gluten-free cupcakes in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.  I want to give all our guests a wide range of choices.

  • We are doing two different flavors and there is enough that everyone can have a slice of each if they want it.

  • We had one teir chocolate, another tier white or maybe it was yellow, I can't remember now...lol. And top layer was lemon, our favorite since we were going to save it (we only saved a few slices)
  • I love it when brides do this for weddings.  I'm allergic to cocoa, so I'm sad when they cut into the cake and the whole thing is red velvet.  It gives guests the chance to pick.  And, you could incorporate your wedding colors.  Orange cream cake, pink strawberry cake, yellow lemon or mango cake, etc.  You can't go wrong with a tier of white cake, too.
  • I'm doing this too!  I don't like the idea of one cake flavor for everyone.  Of course, the biggest layer, the bottom layer, is the best since that's the flavor we liked the most.  That layer is spice cake with a cream cheese filling.  The middle layer is french vanilla cake with Bavarian cream filling.  The top layer is caramel cake with Bavarian cream filling.  I <3 our baker!

  • I'm doing 3 tiers for 70 guests withe very tier a different flavor. The bottom will be red velvet (so many people love this), the middle will be a white cake with raspberry filling (my fav) and the top will be german chocolate (FI fav).
