For Monday (or Tuesday, since, holidays), My favorite midwestern potluck recipe

Since my cousin posted my Great Aunt Martha's recipe on Facebook...
FTR, here in the midwest, we understand how much sugar you should put into salads.  (hint, it's a lot).

GRAPE SALAD:

"This is a wonderful dessert salad that never failed to be a hit. Made the day before the brown sugar makes the sauce taste like caramel. You can use less brown sugar, if you wish."

8 servings
Ingredients:

4 pounds seedless green and red grapes
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 ounces chopped pecans
2 tablespoons brown sugar

Directions:
Wash and dry grapes. In a large bowl, mix together the cream cheese, sour cream, sugar and vanilla. Add grapes and mix until evenly incorporated. Sprinkle with brown sugar and pecans, mix again and refrigerate until serving.

(I do eat a large helping of this at the potluck every year.  And then forget about it for another year.  It tastes better than it sounds.  Pictures to follow, although some of the other recipes call for cream cheese and/or nuts and/or yogurt, so no promises that any of the following would taste as good as Aunty's and may or may not look more like vom:)

  • I make this with your aunt's exact recipe, and its always a hit.  Everytime there is a shower or potluck at church somebody text me to make it.  Don't use less brown sugar though, that's the best part!

  • I've had it and rank it a bit like waldorf salad.  At least this calls it what it is DESSERT.
  • I had a coworker that used to make it for every work potluck (oh man, I don't miss working in the office). She called it Carmel Apple Salad even there are no apples in it. She would run around asking everyone doesn't it taste like apples? And it kind of does.

  • Oh I remember going to a relatives' house and having this. Only they had no vanilla, no nuts. And something got swapped out for mayo. I think sour cream.

Yeah, it was that special X-P

  • I should make some--I like it.
I also plan on making some 'spaghetti pizza' this week.

  • it kind of looks like someone threw up and then threw sawdust over it.
