taking off the ring

Re: taking off the ring

  • I don't think I've worn my ring for three days now. I take it (and other rings) off to do dishes, cook, shower, sleep, etc. Sometimes I forget to put them back on.

Do you leave your engagement ring on all the time?  or do you take it off at night?

I take mine off at night (after successfully picking multiple holes in my bedsheets and just finding it generally uncomfortable sometimes to sleep on it).

But to anyone I have ever mentioned to about me taking my ring off at night, they find it completely crazy I would ever take my ring off at all.

So, I'm mostly just curious if it's uncommon to take your ring off at night or vice versa.
I take mine on and off at work (work in a lab), when I shower, when I clean my fish tank, when doing things where I think it might get damaged (moving/lifting furniture for example), and also at night because I find it makes my finger swollen.

  • I wear mine all the time during the day, otherwise I feel so empty! I've started taking it off when I go to sleep though because my FI says it stabs his side...

Oh my goodness, I'm a very paranoid person ( I have had a stone fall out already) so I take my ring off to cook, clean, shower, go to the pool, work out, a whole laundry list of things. I do wear it when I leave the house unless I am working out or going to the pool/beach or something.

  • I take it off to shower, wash dishes and when working out.  I have a nice chain that I put it on when I'm working out, because it's either before or after work, and I don't want to go leaving the ring in my car or something.  My fingers swell when working out AND i don't want to ding it up with weights or something.

^^^ This. Also, the ring box my FI used wasn't a typical black box with a cushion, etc in it...it's more of a teeny small inlaid wooden box a friend of his made for him when he was in Iraq, so I keep that on my night table and pt my ring in at bedtime. Also, it feels weird to wear jewelry to bed! Also take it off for "dirty" housework, definitely, and also cooking.

I may be a bit paranoid about losing it, as it was my maternal grandmother's engagement ring, but I'd rather be safe than sorry...!

  • Mine's off for sleeping, bathing, cutting up stuff for cooking, and cleaning with harsh chemicals.  The center stone is from FH's great-grandmother's engagement ring, so I'm pretty protective of it.  Otherwise, it's always on.  I even wear it when I have to work outside for my job...I just have to change gloves a lot since it tends to snag them.  :)

  • I leave my rings on all the time (other than cocktail/fun rings). (Sometimes I wear rubber gloves to make meatballs and the like -also to keep my nails clean)

My great grandmother took hers off to bake once and put them on the window sill, when she was done she went to put them back on and they were gone. , Gran looked all over for them finally had to tell GGfather, she was in such a tissy and low and behold he pulls them out of his pocket and said "I bought you these to wear" She never took them off again.

This story has stuck with me, Niggz (my man) bought them for me to wear.

  • I pretty much have mine off when i'm home (always put it in the same spot).

I put them on when I leave UNLESS (my eyes hurt reading it, so it shall be a list):

    1) I'm going to fitness-walk (horrid finger swelling...leave them on for just a stroll),

    2) Right now, other workouts are at home, but I wouldn't wear it to the gym b/c of swelling and possible damage

    3) I'm going to my pool fitness glass (incl. walking or driving there and errands tacked on), I'm afraid I'd  lose it (also left it off when we went canoeing a couple times) or obsess over making sure it stays put the whole time;

    4) I'm going someplace I know it would be an issue.  I have health issues so have had way too many tests and scans, I leave it home since i'm not sure what they'll say....I also wear a sports bra and shorts or track pants...metal-free = no need to put on a gown (usually)

Right now, the 4 exceptions do make up a lot of my time out, but that will hopefully change one day!  Overall, on when out, off when in works for me.  I've already seen FI do similar things with accessories and have mentioned that I do care that he wears a ring in public but he is free to do what he wants in terms of "at home" and to add reasonable exceptions (he's military...fine w/ it off for a weapons qualifier)

  • I rarely wear my ring. For one thing, my line of work it's a major safety factor, so almost all jewelry is banned from the work floor. We're allowed to wear a plain band as a wedding ring, but it's frowned upon and the only exception. Any rings with stones are on the "You're violating dress code/GMP's" list. I have a little trinket box on the nightstand where it & my other jewelry live. If we go somewhere nice, or I remember to wear it, it's on my hand, but I'm no longer used to wearing any jewelry, so it feels funny.

When guys get snarky about no ring outside of work, if I absolutely cannot keep my mouth shut, I chew them out that " I shouldn't have to have something that marks me as someone's property to have no interest in a twatwaffle like you, and actually, the practice of wearing jewelry is against the tenets of the religion I was raised in (Seventh day adventist), so go shove your cheese and whine where the sun don't shine and let me get back to having a nice time." Rhyme styling totally accidental, but sounds awesome, and scares the bejeebus out of them when you add in the " Mariah in the booth" hand action.
    (/end rant)
  • I only wear mine when I'm fully "dressed" for work or to go out. Otherwise, if I'm at home/at the gym/running errands, I don't wear it. And as soon as I walk in the house in the evenings and put on my comfy clothes, it comes off. I may be a weirdo, but as much as I love my ring, I find most jewelry really irritating to wear.
    I'm in this camp.

Me too, only I don't wear it to work, so I really only wear it out of the house on weekends and occasional evenings. I work with acid and some other fun chemicals and don't want my ring exposed to them.

Pretty much.  I often forget to wear it on weekend outings as well.  I got a sideways look at the bar the other night because my husband was wearing his and we have different last names.  Oh well.
  • i wear mine all the time except when im cleaning with chemicals, washing dishes, washing the dog, taking a shower or cooking.
  • I take mine off when I'm cleaning, preparing raw food, putting on lotion, swimming (if I remember to take it off), and I think that's about it. When I first got it I took it off to sleep because I wasn't used to wearing it, but now I don't even take it off for that. I know that when we get married, FI is going to take his off for work because he works on garage doors and it could be dangerous if it gets caught on something, but we're going to get him a chain to wear it on when he's at work.

Mimiphin - I hope if you decided to take yours off, your FI wouldn't have the same controlling/borderline emotionally abusive reaction that your great grandfather did. To take them and let her panic that they were lost, then patronize her and treat her like a child when she finally told him, was a pretty dick move. I know this happened a long time ago and it was a distant relative and not your FI, but I hope it isn't really this story that keeps you from removing your rings when you're in situations where you might want to ... because sheesh ... personally, this story really rubbed me the wrong way.

    Edited for typos.
  • I have a small, delicate ring that I wear most of the time.  It's bezel-set, so it's going NOWHERE. I also have my grandmother's diamond that I wear for special occasions, but it's huge and I hate to wear it every day.  I work in a library and it gets caught on books and filing.

Otherwise, my rings are off when I'm showering, cooking (ew, messy), and rock climbing or fencing.  My hands don't swell much, but the metal can have an effect on my grip.

I take mine off to sleep, shower, when I'm doing house/yard work and sometimes at the gym or out hiking. I don't like how it feels when water gets under the bands and I don't like the idea of getting the days germs on meat or bacteria from meat getting in the ring. When I'm active my fingers puff up a bit and the rings "choke" my finger. It also is inconvenient for weight lifting, the bar pushes into my finger and it hurts! If I'm not lifting weights I'll wear only my wedding band. During sleep sometimes I heat up and again experience my fingers puffing up so the rings become uncomfortable. I did try wearing my engagement ring all the time in the beginning but over time realized there are certain times that it just needs to come off.

I always wear my rings when I leave the house though. Even if it's just to the grocery store or some quick errand.

My sister and SIL gave me a tough time for taking my rings off. My SIL said "When I was married I NEVER took it off. Every time you take it off it's like you're breaking your marriage vows!" Kind of think she was joking about that last part but who knows. I just told them I want to keep the rings looking nice.

ETA: When I'm not wearing the rings they both go in the engagement ring box.

Oh gosh. Mine is off half the time--it needs to be resized (too big) so it's hard to type while wearing it. I also remove it to scrub things, wash dishes, shower, split firewood, or do major food prep like kneading bread dough or smashing garlic. We also have super hard water, so I don't want to stain or damage it! Mostly I just try really hard to leave it in the same spots.
  • I only wear mine when fully dressed as well.

I can hear what you are saying but I assure you that that wasn't the case.

I just can't think of a reason why I would want to take my rings off. It feels like I am missing something if I don't have them on. I swim, garden, shower, workout, everything with them on. I really didn't think I was in the minority on this.

  • My ring is an opal surrounded by diamonds. Thankfully after FI gave it to me, a friend let me know that opals are very soft stones. I had no idea! So I take it off when washing dishes, cleaning, showering, putting lotion on and sleeping.
  • I have to take mine off to coach cheerleading bc I mainly spot gymnastics and I constantly get it caught on the girls shirts:/

I usually leave it at home...so I'm pretty sure they all think I'm faking an engagement haha
  • I only take mine off to shower or wash the dogs. The setting is high so it gets caught on stuff all the time, but whatever. I love it.

  • when I first got it I took it off at night, when doing the dishes, when showing, when cleaning, etc. I was paranoid of anything happening to it, and not use to sleeping in rings.    Now( a few months later) I never take it off except to clean it.   I've gotten use to it always being on.

  • I take mine off when I'm kneading dough. Or when I'm washing my hair with horse shampoo. But that's another disaster altogether. (nightmare haircut just before engaged, and horse shampoo has been advised). Surprisingly, horse shampoo seems to strip the colour off my hair, so it has me very worried about what it will do to my ring. Most likely nothing, but I'm paranoid anyway. Other than I never take it off. My sister and mom look at my like I'm crazy if they even see my playing with it by sliding it up and down my finger!
