Inner Envelopes- I'm so confused!

I really hope someone can clarify this for me... I've looked up proper ways to address outer/inner envelopes for unmarried coupes and I get conflicting information based on the website or wedding book.  Here's what I've decided to go with for an unmarried couple who lives together (each name on a separate line, ordered alphabetically):
Outer and inner envelope:   Ms. Jane Doe
                Mr. John Smith

For an unmarried couple living separately, I decided to address the outer envelope to one person and his/her address since that seems to be the most mentioned way to do to it properly.  But the inner envelope is where I get confused... If the outer envelope is addressed to Mr. John Smith but I'm inviting his partner as well, would the inner envelope say Mr. Smith and Ms. Doe (all on one line) or with their names on separate lines?  I thought maybe all on one line because it's like an "and guest" situation except I know the guest's name.

What do you all think? Is there any etched-in-stone proper way to do it, or do I just go with whatever seems best out of all the different information on the subject? Thanks!!!!

Re: Inner Envelopes- I'm so confused!

  • I'm not etiquette savvy but I think it's seperate lines if they're not married. No "and" between the names either.
  • For the inner envelope for un married couple living separately look identical to the un married couple living together, both names listed on different lines, no "and" as it implies marriage.  On the outer envelope either list it the same way you did the inner or just put the name of the home owner.  I've had people send me mail at an address that I no longer or never lived at. It does work.
